Am I wrong to want an Impreza?

Inherited my Dad's FIAT Croma 1.9 oil burner when he passed away 1.5 years ago.

The car has served its purpose and I'm ready to move on.

Recently purchased a house and got married 1.5 months ago. Looking for something a bit fun. Will be kids next and years of sensible motoring :p

Was considering a Civic Type R but I'm going off that idea now.

Mondeo ST220 is still high on the list but I'd only be interested in the saloon model. Prefer it to the hatchback.

Now I've noticed a couple of Subaru Impreza's that have fallen nicely into my price bracket.

Not looking at the STI model. A WRX turbo would do me fine!

Seen a few localish:

Any of those worth going for a viewing? What do you need to look out for?

What would running costs be like? I'll probably be doing approx 12k miles a year.

Any advice appreciated.:)

I though that.

The CTR would've been great if I was a single man but its just not practical enough.

The ST and Scooby tick the boxes.

biggest costs wit the scoobies are the low fuel economy. And being japanese turbo nutter cars, they like the super stuff.

Expect to get very friendly with your local shell station.

Expect around 18mpg for normal driving @108.9p for Shell V power.

Servicing wont be too much more than any other performance saloon at around £300 for a major service however.

They will go through brake discs and tyres if driven hard though. And you'd have to be a saint to resist doing so with this sort of power under you feet.

depends if you habit of dropping them and doing repeated hard starts.

The impreza will grip and grip, so the tempation to do this must be very real. But it comes down to how sympathetic you drive it.

Bit like brakes / tyres really.

I dont think many people buy imprezas and drive them gently :)

Something a bit less hardcore like the 3 series or ST220 will give less temptation, more practicality and still put a grin on your face

Personally I would only get an STI Impreza, cant see a WRX being that much quicker than a St220 especially when rolling.

A FIAT dealer quoted me around £500 for a major service. How they could justify that I don't know...

18 MPG under normal driving sounds painful.

I currently do around 42 MPG actual in my FIAT. That would mean a doubling of my fuel bill! £50 would last me 1.5 - 2 weeks easily.

What are they like on a motorway run?

Vectra VXRs are now dropping under 10k

One of the private garages that advertises on the vxr forums sold one recently for 9.5k.

All the hooliganism of the impreza, and massive mid range torque that sends WRXs crying to mummy.

about 30 ish ;)

as i said, prepare to get to know the cashier at your local shell station very welll ;)

The VXR and the ST both have the sleeper factor too - a scooby with a big wing and bucket exhaust attracts the wrong kind of attention IMO.

Depends what sort of attention you want though, if any!

Never considered a 3 series to be honest.

Its a completely different sort of car. I wouldnt want to get an M3 at that sort of price bracket but the 330i is still a pretty quick car.

Will give you a car thats plenty powerful with good handling, plenty practicality and an interior thats a mile away from the japs

4th one for me.

look's a good price for low mileage and extra's on the car.

get what you want m8.

im sure you have worked out the running cost's yourself and feel you can run a scooby.

good luck in your choice as im sure you will be happy with what ever you buy.

ps....but make it a scooby.
