**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

He is 33 according to the Radio just now.
Someone posted on here that he has only gone down hill since he left.

Down hill in the sense he has won the league every year since he left and has won more league titles than he ever did with Arsenal I think I'm right in saying without looking.

Or is it the same amount 4 vs 3 or 4 vs 4.

You mean 25 year old, Captain of his country, league winning, FA cup winning, Carling Cup winning, Champions league regular Darren Fletcher?

And 28 year old, done none of the above Gareth Barry?

The only thing Gareth Barry has proved himself better at being than Darren Fletcher is that so far he has proved himself better at being 28 years old.

Hasn't, I dunno Fortune, and Greening probably got some of those medals aswell, and Djemba Djemba, did he win any medals for you. Being at a better team with better players doesn't make Fletcher individually any better than any of the rest. Considering he's never been a first team pick at any stage at Utd to suggest that any success there is largely dependant on him really suggests how much you are reaching.

hes definitly been a first team pick the past season. he was immense in a lot of games in my opinion. i think the champions league final would have been a better match had he played as Man U just lacked any real energy in the centre.

Perhaps not but the fact that Fletcher has been a regular in our squad for the past 6 years suggests that our manager thinks he's good enough to play for us, no one up until Rafa last year has ever thought Barry was good enough for any of the top 4 clubs in the country and seeing as Rafa wanted to replace the unquestionably better Alonso with Barry his opinion is a bit of a moot point anyway

Well Juve won the title by match fixing, he DOESN'T have that title as it was taken away from them, he then moved to Inter who by default of Juve being relegated and losing half their team, became the default leaders of Serie A, and wasn't a "first team" choice in any of his 3 years there.

He only just played enough games to get a medal in the past 3 years at Inter tbh, not a vital part of the team and Inter find him so crucial they are simply letting him go.

Vieira looked poor in the CL last year - his legs are gone and he doesnt have that effectivity in the middle of the park he used to - still as dirty as ever though.

Not a good signing IMO if it comes off - older creative players are fine, Djorkaeff, Larrson etc as they still have tricks - old defenders are a different kettle of fish.

When was Viera a defender? Wasnt even "just" a defensive midfielder, much more a Roy Keane type, all round central midfielder who broke up play as well as kept attacks going high up the pitch

Ok PV is considerably older now, so maybe his attacking abilities have subsided with age but even so

I would have never really classed Vieira as anything more than a centre midfielder, i wouldnt say he was attacking. His main element was his DEFENSive play, which when you are slower and easily turned for both angle and pace is considerably important.

:D

And you think if Barry was in his place they wouldnt have won all that? They would have won more if they had Barry.

Captaining Scotland isnt amongst the highest awards considering the people in the team. He was a premiership player so they offered it to him ;)

Well, there is talk of us signing Vieira on a free under PAYP conditions.

I would be happy for Arsenal to get him on a free. If he is only 33 then he would be handy to have around. Plus Midfielders can play for longer in his role, he would just have to be more intelligent about his runs. And becareful his zimmerframe didnt get caught in the grass ;)

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes says the club are in negotiations to sign Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

"There have been discussions and there is possibly a deal to be done but nothing has been concluded," Hughes said at the unveiling of Carlos Tevez.

Togo international Adebayor is believed to be on sale for about £25m after three-and-a-half seasons at Arsenal.

The 25-year-old, who scored 16 times for the Gunners last season, has also been linked to AC Milan and Chelsea.

Speaking at the press conference to announce the signing of Tevez, Hughes admitted that there could be more arrivals at the big-spending club before the start of the season.

"It may well be that opportunities will present themselves. We still have areas we want to strengthen," he said.

IF and I do mean IF Hargreaves is finally fit again, you wont see Barry start another England game for the rest of his career, what is he going to start doing that is going to turn him into this amazing player?

If Hargreaves is fit he's in front of Barry. If not, Barry is there alongside Carrick, no question.

What does Barry do better than Fletcher?

Bearing in mind what I what I think of Fletcher.

Everything :)

Tackle, move, pass, head...

Another "shoot me down in flames" type post (but ive not done badly so far!)

There should be a meeting set up tomorrow by City involving sorting out a Work Permit, believed to be for Adebayor.
(I guess even if its a formality you have to apply for a new one or get it transferred if you change clubs?)

yeah SSN says Ade has a meeting tomorrow for work permit, which to me suggest terms, deal is all agreed pending work permit being approved which afaik is a formality(assuming he's still playing for his country, there was some incident where he was sent home or walked out recently? not sure if that would be a problem).

Awesome news frankly, it means we know Wenger has no excuse(monetarily) for not buying a DM, if he refuses to get one and insists Denny/Song are good enough, then we're screwed.

There isnt really that much more choice so you would be right with "no question" :D (without stepping down a huge amount in experience and skill)

Not a chance - Fletcher isnt brilliant by any means, but no chance at all I would replace him with Barry (Money Grabbing Little G** that he is) in the centre for Man Utd for any of Fletcher's games that he has played in nearly 2 years
