co-op ID rant

...

Because you've already ID'd them. No need to ID them again if you know they are 18+.

But the random customer the next day doesn't know there over age and could again report you to the police. That's why you are ID'd every time.

That doesn't matter, you have to ID them every time.

Read this: http://www.wsta.co.uk/Challenge-25.html

It might clear things up for you.

Challenge 25 is not a law, it is a suggested strategy. A shop does not have to follow suggested strategies ... it only needs to comply with the law.

But the random customer the next day doesn't know there over age and could again report you to the police. That's why you are ID'd every time.

And as I said police will see person is over 18 and say yup that's fine.

Tell you what, if you think its that easy, go and do it your self and report back.

In relation to giving it to under age people, its sale via proxy.

If the store sold it to someone who is over 18 and had no knowledge that they are buying it for an under age person, the store is commiting no offence. The person buying the age restricted product for someone not of legal age is however and can be fined.

The police will not caution you for selling to someone over 18 without seeing ID because it is not an offence. The store policy is a different kettle of fish though.

Happened to me at coop also.

I gave them loads of abuse, Asking ID when I am 23 is bad enough but to start writing down my details without telling mye why.

I assumed this person ebhind the till was trying to forge my ID. I had to snatch it back off him.

I hope the manager asked you to leave and never come back. Asking for ID when you're 23, ok, so when our policy is Challenge 25 what's your problem with this? If you don't like the store's policy then why bother going in there in the first place? Nobody's making you go in there and nobody has to let you in the store.

Oh, big man "snatching" your ID back off him, throwing a tantrum because someone was doing their job?

Absolutely. A clear breach of Section 55.

Exactly, which is why I'm doubting the OP in the first place. All we have is a grid - Date + Time, Description, and what they attempted to buy. We do NOT take down anyone's personal details.

He probably wasn't aware that it's the store policy to record unnecessary details about him.

Then why did the cashier still need the ID?

Any court cases where someone tried to argue that a description of their likeness is personal/private information?

Say my friend works in a shop selling alcohol, knows I'm 21 because he's my friend, sells me the alcohol without IDing me. Even if he gets reported.. where exactly is the offence?

I'm 18 and get ID'd about 50% of the time for alcohol (usually depending who I'm with) and have no problem with it - driving license is always in my wallet.

But them writing down the details from my ID? That I would have a problem with.

I' m 20 and got ID'd while buying wine at M&S. Did I whine and moan? No. I just gave him my ID and then was on my way. Whats the big deal?
