Why do people bother "working out"?

I go purely to feel healthy and look good.

Yes its vain, but I also like ot do my hair and look smart before leaving the house. Its all about appearance. Granted nobody is going to see a six-pack underneath clothes but I feel a lot better knowing Im not overweight.

For many of the other reasons other members have suggested.

Plenty of personal reasons I don't wish to discuss but it's my escape, keeps me fit and healthy, allows me to sleep like a log, has increased my aesthetics also the comments and looks make it worth while. I also enjoy pushing myself to my physical limits knowing I couldn't give anymore and reaping the benefits. I've also learnt a lot about the human body in doing so, so it's been educational too and I've lots more to learn.

If I don't achieve much in life (not that I plan on accomplishing nothing!) at least i'll have achieved something that matters to me. If it makes me vein or you can't comprehend it, so be it. And the end of the day I'm happy doing what I do and you're happy sat in your garden drinking your beer.

There are difference between "being healthy from exercising" to "going to the gym". People in this thread seems to be discussing and arguing about both.

While the OP believe having a nice cold beer in the garden is nice, I believe majority of men also think that having a walk down the beach with six pack visible on their ab is also nice.

I think using equipments in gym is far more convinent and safer than buying all those weights on your own to use in the garage or simply lifting something heavy from the house.

I though Jez was opinionated about cars only, didn't realise it was about everything else.

Progress and the feeling of getting stronger/better is one aim. Just like tuning a cars engine :D

it is great that there are many like the OP out there. it makes me look better come beach season :).

stick to having your 'beer belly'.

I think too much muscle is a bit ugly tbh, but i'm pretty sure some people think skinny cardigan wearers with zero muscle are ugly so meh:p

I like playing football, or cricket, generally keeping fit - but i have no interest in "pumping iron".

Do the right routines and could throw further, kick harder and run faster.

I do a lot of leg stuff to improve leg power, trying to run faster. A lot of Rugby players have to build muscle purely as protection from hard tackles, a skinny bloke would just get broken.

It's the people who go to the gym to run or cycle etc on a perfectly good day that confuse the hell out of me.

Yeah, I can't think of anything worse than running on a treadmill, I occasionally run in lunchtimes, nothing better than countryside to run though on a nice day.

I am also on my work's fire crew and nothing would be worse than not being strong enough to get someone out of a building or being so unfit you run out of air.

rubbish. Even tho i can bench / dl / squat my own bodyweight and realise the importance of strength, fit is just different imo. Mike Tyson was strong and very fit, certain body builders are just strong and certain runners are just fit.

At his peak Arnold Schwarzenegger used to run full length marathons. He also held records for weight lifting. Neither you would usually associate with bodybuilding.

Not everyone has a nice place to run....and cycling is likely to get you killed round here :o

not to mention the gym is more convenient..
