**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I don't think he'd be a good signing for a fair few teams outside the top 4 on his wages, I mean he's not vastly better than these:

Pavlechenko, Bent, Keane, Defoe
Bellendamy, Robinho, Adebayor, Tevez, Santa Cruz
Saha, Yakubu, Jo(?)
Cole, Ashton
McCarthy, Vieri
Carew, Agbonhalor, Heskey
Crouch, Nugent, Kanu, Utaka

I've always thought him to be overrated, I mean if you look at his career record, it's pretty ordinary, he's never scored more than 11 league goals in a season (and he needed over 30 games to achieve even that feat).

He had one good game against Arsenal in the Champions League which clouds people's judgement a bit I think, he's way too inconsistent for my liking.

I reckon he's better (or less injury prone) than all of those I've bolded and arguably a few others.

He's not meant to be your main goal getter as well, I agree he's inconsistent but he still gets around 10 a season which isn't bad.

You gotta remember as well in his first two seasons at Newcastle we flirted with relegation and in his third actually got relegated, and he's still got a 1 in 3 goal record.

Considering we've only got Vieri on trial I feel its unfair to include him in that list. I would however love Martins at Blackburn. He's a similar type of player to roberts, but with more of an eye for goal. He's also younger and as much as I like Roberts, I wouldn't mind him being phased out if we brought Martins in.

Crystal ball? or plonker? :D

You failed to consider two other possibilities, that IS Hunterlaar, or its another guy called Hunterlaar and has his own name on the shirt :p

As for that list of strikers, Martins is, any day of the year, even while injured, with 2 broken legs, a better footballer than Heskey is.

As for Vieri is old despite how class he might have been, he also went passed his original trial without an offer and is on an extended trial, which to me says at first glace he isn't appearing that good and he's not a certainty to get a contract. Considering the club really has one striker, I can't see Vieri exactly setting the PL alight, can you? Though personally I'd love to see him have some fantastic games and hope its more his fitness/work ethic at question and that we'll see some pure quality touches and bits of magick on the field as he comes off the bench as a super(unfit) sub.

I agree with all the other highlighted players although maybe we might differ on if they are in bold because of being worse, or being more injury prone I don't know ;)

Though being a Gooner I'd also say he's better than Ade :p

An assumption that way too many people make. I get Spurs fans trying to convince me they were on a level playing field as Chelsea before Abromovich came.

Ye, ye...

Doesnt that make an average of 5th :p

Personally I hope he's sold. He's got some qualities (game intelligence) but I couldn't stand the thought of Benitez rotating him throughout the season. The frustration was unbearable watching him in the past. He could be a real lazy ****** at times.

No one heard anything about Alonso yet? Was surprised to see him sitting on the bench yesterday.

As far as I am aware it run out at the weekend just gone, not sure how acurate that is though

Same, read something in probably fridays press about it running out this weekend, was a pretty hefty chunk of the price they would have to pass on. Though its completely retarded to not put the very last second of the transfer window as end of the clause as people will just do what Benitez did, and its likely why he wanted so much extra cash.

Benitez and Redknapp are really getting on my nerves though, any other club that doesn't want a player usually sells for normal or under valued prices, with Ade we took the first bid given, we'd probably have taken less, if we'd come out and said we didn't want him anymore City would have bid less.

But both those two make it clear players are for sale, unwanted, easily replaceable, then say theres no way they'll sell them cheap. Redknapp going on about not selling Bent for anything less than they bought him for, despite bad mouthing him all season. Spurs overpaid, everyone knows but now they won't sell unless someone else does, its madness.

The more I think about Arsenal the more I want to spend big to bring in some English players, not because I want the club more english, just scared leaving it till the rule comes in(if it does) will leave us with far worse players at higher prices. Young/upson would be good buys, one first team, one cover/rotation. Or even a Lescott for not to ridiculous price would be good though very little chance of that.

When does the Alonso sell-on clause run out? Is this why Madrid havent tried that hard yet to get him?
Ran out a few days ago.

I think Madrid are trying to unsettle him in the hope that he'll ask for a transfer and get him cheaper as a result. Alonso coming out and saying he won't ask for a transfer has pretty much ended that idea so if they want him they'll have to pay big for him.

Benitez has made it clear he wants to keep Alonso.

Benitez annoys you because he's trying to get the best price he can for a player he's repeatedly said he doesn’t want to sell?

I'd stay indoors mate, the world's full of people that try and do the best for themselves. Infact anyone that doesn’t is a bit of a moron tbh.

I'd be happy to see him go for free, but sadly it looks like he's going to be used the second choice striker this season. Let's hope Torres don't get injured.

Wenger said:
"We must trust the players we have. It's a very important season for us and I believe we are in a very strong position," he said. "Big clubs lose big players. AC Milan have lost Kaka but will go on. Arsenal have lost big players before but we go on.

"We have also had positive messages - players like Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas are staying here.

"I believe we have a strong enough squad to meet the targets we have."

:(. Surely last season proves the exact opposite. Even if Song is our first choice DM what happens when he gets injured. We have no cover whatsoever. I think we can get by without replacing Ade but we certainly need to bring in some other players, preferably a big name DM and some more cover at the back.

Aye, and after last summer I'd love to say that Wenger's got somebody in his hat...but..

How could you suggest such a thing - Madrid would never counternance unsettling another club's player they are interested in!!!!! :D:D:D
