**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Well personally i think our defence needs a lot of work on...we played Barnet...should have ripped them a new one but ended up with a 2-2 draw:(...pretty dire if you ask me.

Did you see the game? Most pre-season games are just a run-out for the players and there is no emphasis placed on winning the game, Verm looked pretty good against Barnet I though, at least considering it was his first game. There were only a few first teamers playing and even then they only played for 45 mins and were clearly taking it easy. Don't pay too much attention to the pre-season friendlies, look at Liverpool's results, sure their fans aren't too bothered ..

Terry to Man City!

Fair enough, i didnt see the game..saw a few highlights on SSN. Arshavin looks in good form..bagged a couple of goals so am hoping big things from him this season.

Im just glad we got rid of that lazy bugger Adebayor..lets see what sort of history they make with him in the side...seeing as he said it wasnt anything to do with money haha. Although ill be eating my hat if he does well and bags 20+ goals for them :/

Yes, other than not fit players and, very few regulars, the dire Djourou at right back and the absymal Silvestre at left back, who god knows how made a whole bunch of terrible back passes and short passes to other defenders that were stupidly close to being intercepted and were all a problem.

But the reason they got chances, was they ran through our midfield like it wasn't there.

Just like our first team our reserve team used to be Randall as an offensive wanna be Fabregas, he played a much more holding role in reserves last year, and sucks at it. Frimpong who in that game played the more holding role, was terrible aswell. Randall made a couple really bad challenges, even more so for a preseason game.

Defensively we are MORE than fine. Eboue is a well above average right back, and he's back up, Gibbs is already a pretty decent back up to Clichy and he's getting better with huge potential. We now have 3 real centre backs with some incredibly dodgey further backup cover.

Defence wasn't the problem last season, even in those embarassing games it was Song who was missing for 2 of the 3 Chelsea goals. The Anelka one in particular, for no reason he was pressing Cech, in his own box, he's an idiot, the DM pressing their Keeper for no reason, Cech to Anelka, ANelka ran though this massive completely empty midfield Song shaped whole and bang, goal. It was also Song and Denilson stood watching 5 yards outside the box as 6 liverpool players lined up to score the winning goal inside the box. They weren't out run, they weren't beaten by pace, both players don't know they should be following the midfield runs into the box, they NEVER do it. WE'd have beaten Liverpool if either of them had an ounce of defensive ability.

Utd's defence is far from bad, they lost to Barca because the midfield provided no cover at all. There were few individual errors all season at Arsenal and Man U at the back, the few games their were huge issues were mostly overrun midfields(or Vidic being a bum).

I think Wenger HAS to buy.

At the moment, Arsenal's problem is that they have a good team but a small squad. A fully fit Arsenal team will give any of the big four a run for their money.

But if they were to lose Arshavin, Fabregas, or an Eduardo/Van Persie, there doesn't seem to be an abundance of cover in the form of experienced players.

If Chelsea/Man U get an injury, they often have a Champions League experienced player ready to step in to fill any position. Liverpool as well in most areas. But I think Arsenal are lacking in this regard.

We have a very good 1st team (Apart from that holding DM) and most areas are covered with some injuries but the amount of injuries we have suffered over the last two seasons we really need to increase the squad.

Personally at the beginning of the summer i was hoping that we would get a Defender (which we got) and two DM's.

Selling Ade for £25m was an unexpected bonus after his poor season.

We have Song, Denilson and Diaby fighting for the DM position but none of them are good enough to make that position their own.

I have heard rumours that Diaby has been bulking up a bit in pre-season but we need a regular to claim that position as their own.

I dont think we will be disappointed going into the season, as we all think that he wont get anyone. Maybe we will get a nice surprise...

I think it would be a good move for Terry if he joined City, not only would he be on super money and make Chelsea weaker, but he'd only be down the road from his childhood team in red. ;)

The latter I agree with wholeheartedly, I really don't expect anyone that we really need, being bought in so it would be a nice surprise if we got someone. But if we don't buy, it seems yet another even bigger indication for me, that Wenger's lost his, I don't know, objectivity at the very least, in terms of picking the best team on a game by game basis and getting rid of/bringing in the wrong players.

If thats the case, and its been a few years we've been losing people we shouldn't have been, then we're only going to be in a worse season year by year.

AS for your first point, I've heard Diaby is bulking up also, but I can't see that it would help, he can't tackle, he's an utter disgrace tackling as he keeps banging into people's ankles and high tackling, considering his own injury he's a hazard on the field. Defensively its his positioning, not his strength thats an issue. Infact I'm not sure theres a single part of his game that would be improved with more strength. It also won't fix his defensive shortcomings, in poor reading of the game, inability to tackle, defensive positioning.

The most disturbing thing in terms of Wenger misreading the problems in the squad are he stood by and said Denilson was fantastic, up till the final 1/5th of the season when suddenly he wasn't good enough and Nasri at first started to play DM, then Song, this is a guy he said would be fantastic there all year, dropped for a midget winger, then Song pushed back in there with Diaby tested in there for a couple games. How can you claim how good they are while simultaneously thinking a winger whose never played that position before is suddenly the better option?

The mind games have started

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed local rivals Manchester City as a major threat to Manchester United's Premier League title this season.

City manager Mark Hughes has this summer spent millions on building a squad to break into the top four.

But United boss Ferguson said: "It won't be easy for them to win anything, even with the players they have bought.

This is coming from the man who sold the worlds best player and bought Micheal Owen

Christ you have moved on fast, so Ronaldo is now a player that was well rubbish, "need to get back to being that and key players" so was Cantona just a key player?

You guys make me laugh.

Owen has shown nothing, he has scored a couple of goals against tin pot teams. Bent scored about 14 goals in pre season last year and he was a flop, couldnt score from 6 yards with a header, I just hope Owen can get back to fully fitness for Englands sake.
