Some users will say anything to make their now mediocre purchase sound great against all odds. It happens :)

In this case though, I really hope it's the case that dr4g0nf1y didn't look at the transfer rates before commenting. If he did then the above sentence applies.

Then maybe you haven't noticed that I'm not interested in wasting £100's on a hard drive that will only last 5 years full stop.

personally I'd got for a raptor drive if I wanted small space for performance but I'm not even bothering because when you get to a certain level anyway it doesn't make that difference, just as human eyes can't notice the difference after 25fps.

you want to buy something because it's new then by all means go ahead but I dno't care for such things.

It's still a gimic until they surpass the performance of the current trend. 5 years for a gaming/media pc is have that time.

It seems like your in for it short term, I prefer looking to the future.

thanks :)

Its not the FPS increase I was after, Its texture loading times in MMO's. Anyone who was ran around in Dalaran in WoW will know what I'm talking about

future yes.....

I wasn't actually talking about fps myself that was an example of where the human eye itself perceives stills as a moving image, but people will go off on a tangent for the sake of a personal attack.

I haven't actually bought an ssd drive myself as I clearly stated above and in other posts. Just because numbers are higher doesn't prove is a better product.

i was amazed the difference my SSD made and i only had a corsair S128

im waiting for my crucial 128gb to arrive and the corsair is going in my laptop because after using an SSD i couldnt stand my laptop being so slow.

Isnt the figure of 5 years if you are writing like 20gb a day? I know I wont be doing that on my system / gaming drives where I need the performance. I also know I wont have a five year old drive in my PC in 5 years time.

Just installed the 128gb version and windows 7 rc. Heres a few results:

Restart time was 70 seconds now 39.

Something odd with the 512k write

Its actually if you will be writing a whole lot more than 20gb a day that it will only last 5 years. I dont think many people will even have the same drives in 2.5 years.

I totally agree. Plus don't forget that is the minimum guranteed lifespan. It's not like that after 5 years and 1 day all ssd drives self destruct.

Thinking back if I was still using a drive from 5 years ago I would be still using a 80gb PATA drive so as said, a 5 year minimum lifespan shouldn't bother anybody really.

FFS - stupid DPD.

I have just checked my online tracking for my parcel and I won't be getting it until tomorrow now.

It arrived at Newcastle this morning at 1.35am for delivery today. Then went to York when they realised that Newcastle don't deliver to me, then it's come back to Newcastle from York and now tonight they have decided it has to go back to York for delivery tomorrow.

I'm fuming as I am off tomorrow and planned to spend the day installing it so it will have to wait until the weekend now.

If I didn't have free delivery I would be demanding my postage money back.

I've got this installed and... damn it's fast.
Currently tho, I've just got in sitting in my case, as I can't find anywhere to install it properly in my Antec P182 case :( I can put it in the 3.5 floppy bay with the 2.5/3.5 converter, but then I'm left with a nasty hole in the front of my case.

Anyway, I've installed Windows 7 but it doesn't seem to have automatically set it up for SSD usage, i.e superfetch and defrag are left on by default. As such, I'm worried that it wouldn't have aligned the drive properly, do I need to reformat again in a different way to sort this?
I currently have AHCI mode on.

Assuming someone is present at the delivery address, just get them to open the door before the driver reaches it.

Doesn't work. I live in a basement flat, and not within earshot of the front door. There's an intercom, but I don't know if it even works (no way to test it with just me on my own), let alone if the delivery guy will bother to use it. My solution is I've printed off a letter in big writing saying "Dear parcel delivery guy, I AM in. If the intercom doesn't work, give me a ring on ****** and I'll be right up to take delivery."

I've laminated it at work and am going to blue tack it to the front door tomorrow morning. I've made it general enough that I can re-use it for future deliveries too. :p

Ah, the things we do for computer parts. :D

Dammit, with my antec 300 I brought a nice 3.5" to 2.5" kit, but its going to go in a 5.25" internal slot. Maybe buy a 5.25" to 3.5" kit and use both at the same time lol!!

119GB formatted X 10'000 writes = A lot.

20GB a day? 160 years!!

Alright so it doesn't work quite like that, but 5 years? Please.

As for telling the difference, just lol.
