So My PS3 Stopped Reading Discs, What Should I Do?

Just started the restore - takes about three and a half hours!

Will let you know if it works (doubt it though).

I think that this is a really grey area. There is a line of thought (supported by 'Which?') that says you should argue the point if your product develops an unexpected fault up to 6 years after purchase
This is actually true but the onus is on you to provide the proof that the fault was not caused by misuse of the product as mentioned above. Six years is what I believe is the 'agreed' length of time by most retailers under the legislation. Despite what that quote says I would expect most companies to tell you to go away and get the report independantly. The reason being is it heavily deters most people from even bothering because they would have to pay upfront a cost of probably £70+ just to get that report to then claim it back. That is of course assuming the report doesn't say the fault was caused by something you'd done yourself, in which case you just spent £70+ for no reason :p

As I thought - the restore didn't help, so it's a fuxorred BD laser.

It still plays DVD's fine, but I think the blu-ray side of it if fubar'd.

Time to buy a new laser methinks. :(

Well - talked to Sony UK again, and they wouldn't budge on the £145 replacement thing.

The guy tried to make out the because it will play DVD's, but not blu-ray movies or games then it could be more than just the laser (possible I guess). But I'm going to go down the new optical unit route - only £60 - it may sort the problem, it may not - but do the cheapest first.

Weird. As far as I know the standard offer out of warranty is repair for £99 (if it is uneconomical cal to repair they will give you a refurb). Or you just pay for a refurb £145. Both options have 3 months warranty. You can easily haggle them to make the 12 months warranty instead of 3. And you can haggle the price down if you are lucky.

I myself went through this with my launch PS3 only 7 weeks ago and got the repair option.

i'm on 3rd ps3 in 14months was going to sign up to cp this month when 3 mth warranty ends gutted noway i paying 1/3 of cost to get repaired.

going to think twice about spending anymore on games now not wanting to get stuck with loads of games and no console.

TBH ps3 / xbox both suck should last longer than 18 mths

I expect the repair price may also drop with a PS3 price drop, be a bit daft paying £145 for a repair when a new console could be £200. There are other options that charge less than Sony and give you a longer warranty, some are walk in shops others you can send the console to for repair.

Pretty quick then. I've read stories of Sony holding them for up to 6 weeks.

Well the thing is, the guy on the phone said if it was not fixable then they just give the refurb (which would have cost £145). I imagine they bung in a new Blu-Ray drive, if it don't work they send you a refurb. The only possible hold up I can think is if they don't have parts or run out of refurbs, short term.

I imagine mine had same issues as yours. Any disc you put in is not recognised and you see that spinning thing in the top right hand corner? Drive does not even make spinning noises or pick up sounds?

Sounds exactly the same, top right corner is scanning for the disc but the disc icon fails to appear on the XMB.

Yep. I was very angry tbh, as I had only just sold my (working perfectly) 360 the month before as I didn't need 2 consoles. This was one of the things I banged on to the guy on the phone about :)

Hopefully you will get it back on Friday in time for Arkham Asylum?

I didn't really enjoy the demo :(

Had the same issue on my 60GB, bought a new laser, fitted it and it's worked fine ever since! Newer lasers are allegedly more reliable.

Just spoke to Sony Support on the phone to get an update and they said it will take 14-21 days for them to repair it and send it back......... and here's me thinking I was going to get it back this week.

I would say that's their conservative estimate.

If they said "3-5 days" and it showed up in a week they'd get a lot of complaints.

Patience!
