I read in a newspaper earlier that the PS3 slim was, and I quote ' No larger than a book'.

Very true indeed, if your book is the Guinness book of records, or the Barbie annual. :p
 
Just to clarify for me, the slim is essentially no different to the original PS3 in terms of the actual specifications? Sure it's going to be more energy friendly etc but in terms of what it can do there are no new features?
 
I wonder what the bolded bit is about? Apart from the obvious.
Sony has made some enhancements under the hood to boost its processing speed and power efficiency. The gaming console will carry an upgraded version of the Cell microprocessor, which is being jointly developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.

The new chip has been manufactured using an advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process, an IBM spokesman said. Based on IBM's Power architecture, the chip delivers many performance improvements while drawing less power than earlier chips, IBM has said. The earlier console carried a Cell processor manufactured using the 65-nm process. IBM declined to provide the clock speed of the new Cell processor.

Chip production enhancements for the Cell could deliver some cost benefits to users, said Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research. The chips will become more power efficient and users may see some energy savings, Peddie said.

Smaller chips also cost less to produce, which may have contributed to the lower console price, Peddie said. That could also set the stage for further price drops in the future.

If i was you i would wait for a non sony stand, the Sony was $25 prob about £20, you used to be able to get non sony stands that gave you USB ports in the rear for about a £10.

Kinda shocked they didn't just include it in the box like the Wii stand. Its just a bit of plastic.

Its the same feature/software wise. Just different guts and shape.
 
Sticking with my 40GB PS3, rarely play it at the moment, so I couldn't justify the purcahse and I much prefer the current model.

They didn't supply one with the PS2 either. They even made a horizontal stand for the PS2.

Yeah, no doubt that the third party stands will be cheaper and better but if it's going to be on display then I'd rather it be an official Sony one. Same with joypads etc, I never buy any other brand than the manufacturer of the console.

And Rob, I'm not solely waiting for the stand, more waiting for GT5 if I'm honest, but the likelihood that the stand comes out first is greater. :)

It would cause no end of problems to alter the specs of a fixed spec platform. As good as it would be to upgrade the GPU and RAM, it would be a mess. The Amiga (if you remember those) Tried this and it was possibly one of the things to kill the Amiga off. One vague example: Imagine if a particular game was programmed from the ground up to run as fast as it possibley can.

Aye but i think he means more along the lines of backward compatibility.

In answer to the originally quoted post, the only real difference is a 160gb hard drive, something that could be upgraded anyway.
