I'm afraid I'm going to have to re-plug Cromartie Highschool in this thread because it is the absolute pinnacle of comedy and awesomeness.

If you thought Full Metal Panic Fomofu was funny...NO! if you thought yakitate Japan was funny then think again :D

Insane amounts of injokes and media/trivia referencing and highly clever to boot!

Cromartie is one series i don't get tbh, it was quite popular among the folks at my unis anime society but i just got the impression it was ....weird and a bit to wtf humor for me.

On a side note im still working my way through the various series of Neo Venezia/Aqua fame and its just a joy to watch. The chibis/characters just make me laugh and the visuals are fantastic to look at. Also its my theory that Akari is a descendant of Osaka from Azumanga, its the chibi expressions that give it away :P.

I watched some of FLCL due to it being recommended as similar to eureka 7 on myanime lists and I thought it was just rubbish. I'm all for insane things but it just didn't work in any way manor or form for me.
I guess you liked Eureka 7 then? I can see why some people would not be bothered with FLCL though, I almost lost interest.

Something I've been meaning to watch, I watched a good few episodes a while back and now have the first series but haven't watched any of it yet because I'll need to start from the beginning again. Worth it?

I have to agree over Cromartie ... in fact it's so bad it's in my "getting rid of" pile ...

Funnily enough, having finished Ah! My Buddha disk 4 (which was good), I've been rewatching A__a The Animation again over the last few days :)

edit:

btw anyone want Kanon on Blu-ray ....? .... there's a couple of downsides;

- It's the Japanese release so there will probably be no English subs on it
- It'll be the wrong Blu-ray region for the UK
- When it's released in December the list price is Y62580 :eek::eek:

(work that last one out then ... this morning you could get approximately Y147 = £1 on the highstreet)

Yes E7 is one of the few animes I rate as a 10/10 series, the music and the style just works together unbelievably well, the character's show growth through the series and you kind of do feel for eureka etc. Plus its got mecha, gidget and anemone (and of course eureka) :)
It has to be watched in japanese though as the American actors they voiced it with are absolutely appalling and so out of place with the character.
Watched the film too and albeit based around the series ideals it just didn't work out as well, it would have been a good film IF I hadn't seen the series first.

Yes :D

I've recently watched
- akane iro ni somaru saka (due to the same voice actor as taiga in toradora) and thought it was ok but just needed 'something'.

- Tayutami - pretty enjoyable but the ending could have been a little better.

- Macross F to and its basically a mash up of macross saga (robotech) and the macross film(s) (the one with the bird people) and brought upto date with the styling - worth a watch if you like macross series.

I've been watching the second series of Code Geass, for some reason I didn't really like the first one but I am liking the second one  It's a bit random really considering the plot is basically the same as the first but hey.

memyselfandI - I've already got my order in for Kanon, that price is just so unbelievably cheap :p

According to google 62580 yen is £402.

Surely that can't be right?

Search for Kanon on cdjapan (it's not listed on Rainforest Japan yet) ... rrp is 62580Yen with discounted price of 59600Yen ... that's not unsurprising given the R2(J) DVD boxset has an rrp of 39480Yen and given the premium price of the first Blu-ray boxset for Air which was half the episodes of Kanon.

I not only expect that it is right, but I'm not even that surprised. Japanese pricing is _that_ high.

Question:

Why are most women in animes absolute bitches? Real from Ergo Proxy joins the list of two timing, backstabbing, lying, malicious whores, a list which seems to grow longer with every anime I watch. Is there some sort of Japanese cultural reason for this? Because it seems to run true in so many series...

you're watching the wrong sorts of anime as to be honest I haven't really seen too many fitting that description.

Yes you got your angry loli types but you also have the weak defenceless loveable types, the dumb but cute and of course the super intellectual with big breasts and glasses.

Well obviously if you're watching some Comedy or Romantic what I'm saying isn't going to apply -.-

My point is, if there is a betrayal or similar that's integral to the story, it seems that a majority of the time it's done by a female character where it could just as easily be done by a male one. There must be a reason for this, do the Japanese view women as more fickle or capricious because of their society where men are far more dominant, therefore they find it easier of more natural to portray women in these roles for example?

The Cat Returns?

thanks for the heads up memyselfandi :)
I'll have to keep an eye open as I suspect if they are showing multiple Ghibli films they'll be repeating Earthsea again soon :)

Has anyone seen Kannagi?
I'm tempted by the R1 release, but i'm not sure at the moment :)

i just finished watching earthsea and i just had to laugh at Timothy Darlton aka Bond as Sparrowhawk.

As for Kannagi i saw it a while back, its ok but nothing special. There are better comedies out there imo.

I'd hazard a guess at The Cat Returns as well ...

Kannagi ... it's reasonably amusing. I gave up on it when it was airing originally but I watched the part 1 DVD when it came out and have part 2 on pre-order. It had it's fun points but I can't say it really grabbed me. I did have audio issues at one point (I created a thread on AoDVD regarding them) but haven't had a chance to try the disk in another player yet ...

Watched the second and third disks of Misaki Chronicles today (having watched disk 1 a weekend before last). I think I prefer Divergence Eve as I found this second series to just be confusing most of the time.

Struggling with A__a: The Natural this evening ... not due to any problems with the series but because my headphones appear to be knackered :(

It will have been The Cat Returns judging from what Film4 have on over the next week or so. Going by Channel 4's surprisingly irritating listing page Film4 has coming up:

Wednesday (26th) 16:40 The Cat Returns
Friday (28th) 15:10 Tales of Earthsea
Monday (31st) 15:55 Princess Mononoke
Wednesday (2nd) 18:15 Princess Mononoke

They do seem to have a thing for showing Ghibli movies. Would be nice if they branched out into showing some other anime movies besides the Ghibli lot once in a while.
