I really want a PSP...but is it worth getting one?

I've had a PSP for around 3 years and I can say that from personal opinion if you do a lot of traveling on public transport or you spend a while away from gaming PC's or consoles then it's a worthy purchase, although if you live in Liverpool, London or Birmingham you're likely to have it taken from you by somebody who tucks their tracksuit into their socks.

For me however It's no good because I don't catch buses or trains, and don't spend that much time away from home. That said, the games are definitely entertaining, there's a fairly sizeable catalogue of games and being able to just hit the power button, and then turn it back on later and resume play is a nifty trick. If I was about to buy a PSP though I'd wait until the PSPGo! was released, although that does depend on wether you like owning physical copies of games or wether you are happy simply possessing the download. :)

This is the thing, it does seem slightly silly sitting on my sofa playing a PSP when I've got a perfectly good PS3 and PC sat there that are more than capable of playing games. But I'm still drawn towards one nonetheless!

I have looked into the PSP Go, but it's just too expensive for something I'll be using casually, and being forced to pay PSN Store prices for games isn't going to help either.

Hmm...I'll have to give this one a lot of thought I think. I'd be much more inclined to get one if games like GTA LCS and VCS hadn't been released on PS2 also, because I've played those already!

It's a shame you've already played the two GTA games that you mentioned because for me, they were the games I bought my PSP for. Tekken is worth a look as well mind. And even though it sounds a little silly playing it on your sofa it can still be a lot of fun. I can see why you wouldn't want to drop £200 on a PSPGo! if it isn't going to get much use. IF it's just going to be casual then go with the PSP 3000. It's still a great little machine even if it's for occasional use. :)

Its not too silly sat on your sofa playing... its a more relaxed way of playing, you have to sit at your desk to play pc games and you have to sit a certain way to play console games. With the psp you can totally relax and play, I play a lot in bed and how can you discount a good sesh on the bog ;)

To answer your questions about games though, most of the big titles are top notch, the wipeout games are excellent as are games like tekken and god of war.

Don't forget that there are a lot of great games coming too, like soul calibur, little big planet, motorstorm and more.

Seeing those games as the big upcoming titles for the PSP kinda just makes me just want to play the better versions on the PS3.

I really hope with the PSP GO they start making original games instead of just porting console games.

I guess that's the main difference, I don't have a PS3, so its a nice way to experience some of those franchises.

I have been drawn to one for a long time also. Can you download games off PSN then? I'd LOVE to play through FF7 again! I love GTA games too, haven't played many so i could buy some of them.

Whats the difference between 2000 and 3000 models?

Hmm...£140 for the awesome blue PSP, Harry Potter game (eugh, why did they have to bundle that game with the cool colour?) and Ratchet & Clank Size Matters. I'd rip the box open immediately and trade-in Potter for something decent, so it doesn't seem too bad a deal. Suppose I need to get a memory stick for it too.

Will have to see how the money situation is after I get paid!

Incidentally, and I'm not sure how this affects your decision, Remote Play is possibly the coolest thing ever. I've just spent all evening listening to music via my PSP while at my desk simply because I can!

Personally I think that if you are going to use PSP (or any other handheld) while getting to work ie public transport, while going on holidays (waiting on airports etc), maybe even lunch breaks then PSP can be awesome and surely there are games that will keep you happy for hours.

I have PSP and DS and do not use them much as I prefer gaming on 360 or PC but when I go on holiday they are perfect time killer (time that otherwise I would waste waiting doing nothing).

Yep, I've been playing through FF7 on it!

As well as the differences the others have mentioned, the 3000 apparently has a better battery life. That said I would have gone with a 2nd hand 2000, but couldn't find one, and a brand new 3000 with a game at £120 was too good to pass up!

Also was considering getting one, but wanted to know, can you buy psp games via digital download?

From what I can see, the new psp go does this, but obviously rather expensive for what it is. Do previous versions offer the same thing? Can you use the psp store directly from psp connecting via wifi (Don't have a ps3).

I've started getting the train to work just so I can play my PSP.

Was playing FFVII this morning - much better than sitting in rush hour traffic and I've found myself hoping my train home was delayed a bit so I can get some extra gaming time.:)

I must say I've owned 2 psp's. The first one I got not long after it was released because it was the cool thing to have. Loads of my friends had one at college. But after I finished I rarely used it. I eventually sold it on.

I then bought another one as my work had a few trips lined up for me so I wanted something to watch films play games on while traveling. PSP fit this bill. I have to say I use my PSP quite a bit now adays.

I tend to use mine on my lunch break at work :) Its perfect for when my gf wants to watch her soaps and stuff on the TV. I also use it when playing WoW. If the raid wipes or going through tactics or breaks I tend to crack out the PSP for a lil bit :)

I currently have the PSP PHAT 1000. Never had a need to upgrade to the newer models.

Well, I think I'll give it a bit of time (few months, or maybe till Xmas) and see, mainly because I'm not sure I should be spending so much money just yet! Perhaps the 3000 will see a bit of a price drop (even if it's just £10) with the launch of the Go, or maybe they'll do some better bundles with the blue one I want that don't include stupid Harry Potter. Definitely going to keep my eye on it though and see if any good deals come out.

Got one! A certain toy shop was selling them for £130 so took a long drive this evening after work and got one. Very nice bit of kit, just need a memory stick and some games so I can actually do things with it, won't even let me update the software without a memory stick! Was going to pick one up in town tomorrow but having looked online, it seems I'd be paying double on the high street so perhaps I'll just try and be patient and order online instead.
