It would be cool if Sony made a Core and premium system. For people that were prepared to pay more for extras.

I hate all the clutter under my TV Now I have to add a PS2 because no BC and USB hubs and a card reader? I already have three consoles under my TV. The mass of wires and accessories is insane.

They tried that, it was the 20gb model and nobody bought it. Nobody bought the 60gb because it was too expensive and nobody bought the 20b as it was just a cut down model. People don't like to buy the lower end product but also don't like to pay a premium, because of this Sony had to cut both models and then settle for a middle ground.

Quick look online has showed me that a trade in store will give you either £159 cash or £198 store credit. Last i heard a popular highstreet store would also price match that so you could end up trading in your 60gb now and walking away with a slim for £52

are we talking like cash converters here or some kind of real shop.

my ps3 overheated a couple of times over summer (dust and carp runs fine now), i called the 2 local stores of main national chains - i remember that whatever they offered me id have to double it myself to be able to afford a new one;/

also losing BC is a bit of an issue for me, i take it like PSN PSX games would still run? just not the legic ps1/2 discs?

It's a real shop but it deals exclusively in exchanging technology products, as i say though someone in this thread said that a real games shop offered to match their trade in price so he ended up getting £198 store credit.

PS1 games will work fine on disk or from the PSN as all PS3s have emulation software on them for the PS1, PS2 games will not work as no emulation software has been written (yet?)

From somewhere on Engadget. Iirc that comparison was against a 80gb, which is quieter than a 60gb anyway.

If you have a big external drive formatted as FAT32 you can backup your hard drive to that, swap, format then restore if you so choose.

Ahh yes I remember that quote - I thought someone might have done something more scientific and thorough by now (how far the db meter was away and see how loud it is from a normal sitting distance etc). Playing FIFA would be the best idea as a lot of people know it really makes the PS3 work it seems after a short while...

Also it would be nice to get a energy meter on the PS3 to confirm how much power it really is taking in certain situations...

I really need to do some research, its my fault for not even considering changing until literally yesterday...

I know it wouldn't be too hard to do, it's just a bit of a faff when you've got a massive drive already in place full of content. :(

Whilst I've probably got a spare drive with space on, I'd have to clear it off to somewhere else and reformat it.

The benefits of the slim don't outweigh the effort saved for me at the moment.

The new heatsink is minuscule in comparison to the old one. It really must be producing a hell of a lot less heat, i bet Sony saved a pretty penny from the heatsink alone.

for anyone who wanted to go from a fat ps3 to the slim how would it be possible to transfer stuff like save games, would it just be by way of usb stick?

also things like friends lists and user accounts how would this work?

Yes.

On the old PS3
  1. Plug in a USB stick / USB hard drive
  2. Go to System Settings > Backup Utility > Backup
  3. Choose "Backup" and confirm your intent
  4. Wait

On the new PS3 simply
  1. Go to System Settings > Backup Utility > Restore
  2. Confirm your intent
  3. Wait
  4. Restart PS3

Your trophys and friend's list etc are tied to your PSN account which is kept in the Sony cloud (online), so you may want to prep the console if you're selling the fat. E.g. You'll have to deactivate the console in PSN > Account Management and "Restore PS3" from System Settings to remove all traces of your PSN ID.

Also, it's worth noting that downloadable games and install data can be added again with minimal hassle (redownloading for free, and inserting the game discs) but will substantially increase the backup size.

I've backed up the whole 500GB PS3 "fat" on a 16GB USB stick by removing anything that doesn't need to be transferred over (movie rips, game data files*) It's all dependant on what you want to transfer and how much room you have on the backup drive *Different from the save files

i tryed once to do a backup to usb but it said i did'nt have enough space on the stick? what size do i need

Sony have been a hardware manufacturer for decades, i'd hope they'd got the gist of things by now :). Microsoft are relatively new to all this in comparison, but their experience in designing operating systems is also shown when comparing the PS3 and 360.

It's backing up your entire hard drive so you need as much as you have installed. What i did was delete everything i could download again, so PSN games, installed games (game data), movies and music. Basically i ensured the only thing left on my PS3 hard drive was my save games and user accounts before i backed up. That way it only took up just over 1GB, before i did this it wanted to use 28GB.
 
so i just rang 2x stores to try and trade in my 60gb ps3, they both offered £125 or half price of the new one - i mentioned somewhere offered more and they just said to sell the console privately - no idea how or why anyone is being offered £198 from the same chain elsewhere in the country.
