****The Playstation 3 Slim Thread****

Quite a few people have in USA it seems. Asked the chains in Uk where they had stock to sell it to me now - but no was the answer - damn queue friendly Brits.

BTW did you buy that reader/hub? Looking for something in black too...

In the US chains have been given the go ahead to ship Slims early. Many believe this is to combat the price drop on the 360 Elite which makes sense as we don't seem to be getting any sort of price drop for the Elite, hence why stores aren't shipping slims early.

Not yet I only looked it up at around 5am this morning. :p I may actually pop down to OcUK and have a look at their new place. (Is there anywhere I can have a cuppa near there?) I've got to pop up Hanley first to drop off my PS3. Finding a bag big enough to fit the boxed PS3 fat in was almost impossible.:D

Apparently there is no way whatsoever to get your SF data back on another PS3.

Don't know where you heard that? I've done it via the "Backup Utility". You just can't do it manually.

This guy already has the PS3 Slim

What can happen to a store if they sell products before the Official date?

Nothing. They're selling them freely in the US since around 2 days ago.

You managed to backup the SF data and restore it to a 'different' ps3 ?, I know it can be backed up and restored to the same system, for example when upgrading a HDD, but I wasn't aware it could be backed up and restored to another system.

I just presumed it would? Never tried it myself but it seems daft not to allow this providing you remembered to deactivate your previous PS3 (or have 1+ activations remaining on your ID).
I was under the impression that by deactivating on your PS3, it would give you +1 activations on a different machine anyway?
I'm pretty sure I've shared my Super Stardust HD with 4 other people, yet I've activated it on two different systems myself when I swapped up my 60GB for an 80GB.

Did you back up all the SF4 data successfully? More info about the backup utility and how you did it........? :)

Well I put a 500GB drive in, so when I sold the PS3 I put back in the original 60GB (System Settings > Backup Utility > Backup)

I successfully backed up and restored all the SF4 data from the 500GB drive to the 60GB drive (I made sure it worked before I wiped the 500GB!!).

All the characters and all my BPs were available. Trophys needed to be re-sync'd.

I'm not available to test it until the Slim arrives. As mentioned above I was able to do it via the upgrade. I did make sure to deactivate the machine, so I don't know if that will help in the future..

For those wondering about ship dates on the pre-orders, I present you this..

I would additionally save your save games on a mem stick aswell - sometimes the backup dont restore these properly (Ive never had an issue) so at least you are covered.

Cant see why that wouldnt do the SF4 stuff...

ps3ud0

Yes you can, but we are talking about 'game saves', they are a different kettle of fish, 'some' game saves are copy protected and can't be transferred or restored onto another system.

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.html

"*Copy-protected data cannot be restored."

I'm not sure how comprehensive this list is but here you go guys,

---------------------------------------------------

Game saves which are copy protected:

Brain Challenge
Dark Mist
The Eye Of Judgment
Fat Princess
Killzone 2
LocoRoco Cocoreccho!
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Mega Man 9
Mercenaries 2: World In Flames
Need For Speed: Carbon
Rock Band
Rock Band 2
Singstar
Skate 2
Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2
UFC: Undisputed
Wolfenstein

Games saves patched to remove copy protection:

MotorStorm: Pacfic Rift
Resident Evil 5

---------------------------------------------------

Now like I said, I think you can back them up using the back up utility in system settings but only if they are being restored to the same system, the way I see it is that they are tied to the system they were created on, I don't think they can be restored to a new/different system.

This would really suck, if true.

I suppose the test comes when the slim arrives :(

The Engadget review does seem pretty positive. The energy usage stats are particularly revealling.

Just an update my PS3 was successfully exchanged for 198 pounds of store credit this morning. They even allowed £20 of my credit to be used as a deposit for my slim which made things easier.

I'm going Conwy again for a week this sat and when I get back I'll be able pick it up. It seems anyone that wants a slim wont have any problems getting one. I'd suggest not waiting till Crimbo though folks. Sony love to hold back stock coming up to Christmases for some reason.

I was allowed to hold a Slim while I was at the gaming store and oh my goodness compared to my 60gb which I mauled up to Hanley the Slim was like a feather in comparison. They say it's something like 34% lighter than the fat which I assume they're talking about the 80gb etc. The 60gb is even heavier than the 80gb so I'm assuming it's over 40% lighter than the 60gb.

Whats the point in having copy protection on gave saves? Anyone know a reasoning behind it? Possibly to stop exploits or something? seems strange

Stops the n00bs downloading 100% saves for the game, and unlocking all the features.

I think Killzone 2 and SF4 are tied to the PSN ID.
