Are you proud of Britain??

No, in fact I'm quite ashamed and embarrassed of modern Britain.

I am proud of the 17 year old lad who just got back from sailing around the globe though. It's like a little glimmer of past glories.

I'm proud of old Britain... the explorers, inventors, military, mariners, architects and everything else. I still don't like Britain though and even if I had been around 300 years ago I probably would have left for American or Australia. Through out history Britain has crapped on the Indians, the Africans, the Americans, the Scots, the Irish and even crapped on it's own people. In my opinion the British have always been a slimy bunch barely better than the nazis. Condescending, smarmy, pedantic, kinder gentler polite nazis with a thoroughly flawed cultural superiority complex.

oh poppy ****. Almost every culture has aspects of superiority complexes. And almost every culture tries to supress others through out history. I'm not trying to excuse past British attrocities but domination, divide and rule, slavery and war supression are hardly british inventions. If anything the concepts of racial equality, freedom, secularism, eduaction and democracy have been aided no end by British influence. The British belief in justice and fairness is a fairly historical abhoration however.

Any nation that has had great influence from the egyptians through to the yanks have had more postive and negative influence on the world.

When you say "Britain has crapped on their own people" shows that you are unable to even distinguish between rulers and the ruled.

I think the British now have lost any sense of common purpose.
I feel there is absolutely no national identity bar the identity the press generate each day.
The world is a tabloid and everyone wants to be the star.

This week more examination results are published, which suggest 20% of all gcse's obtained an a or a*, what does that mean? Are our kids brighter? Clearly not, STIs on the rise, teenage pregnacies on the rise, youth crime on the rise, celebrity culture continues to abound, unemployment up, especially in 'youth' agegroups.

no one has an answer, worse still no one even has a suggestion. They try to tweak a system that is utterly fundamentally flawed. No money is set aside for infrastructure (replacement not new), no money is set aside for future pension provisions. no one even cares.

The UK is falling asunder internally, people are grabbing whatever small portion they can for themselves, and eventually it will lead to destitution for us all. Will I get a state pension when I retire, I can bet I shall not, yet I'll pay my 40 years of NI contributions, and 40 years of taxes. Then I will be means tested and found not to qualify.

The country is dying, some see it, but frankly the masses don't and neither do they care.

As has been said before Britain has given allot to the world in terms of invention, exploration, historical discovery and science and standing up for what is right.

Personally im not proud of Britain as it is now, i see allot of it as lazy, stagnant and nothing to be particuarly proud of with such social problems like binge drinking, crime and problems arising with various establishments such as the nhs and the government.

What's this common purpose and national identity we're supposed to have then? And of course everyone wants to be the star, that aspect of people is demonstrated in pretty much anything.

Like the prime minister for example? I think he earns around 200 grand a year. How much does David Beckham pull in per annum? For running around in a pair of little shorts being watched by other men?

How much money has David Beckham made for his advertisers? How many jobs have those companies created? He's paid what he's worth.

Who is more useless? David Beckham or some ****** at the council office finding new reasons to interfere with people's lives at the tax payer's expense?

Personally I think there isn't a problem. And that the real "problem" is that there will always be some sort of disjoint in a large country. Not everyone will be a success, and in fact we need those that serve at MaccyD's and empty bins. And no-one wants to be there. So what do you do? Let everyone have high paid careers (obvious we can't do that).

If your 18 -25 no money, and no future, what incentive is there for you to get a job bar self respect (which I think increasing numbers lack)? The answer is that there needs to be a bigger gap between not working and working. And with that one step I think we'd get back to a decent country.

The best of us work because we want to and respect the idea of supporting our selves and our families on our own. The worse (and majority) think why work for an extra £50 a week. We need to fix this and fix it fast.

Just IMO

Yes I am, I mean its got its problems but what country doesn't, people seem to think the 1930s were a hip place to be British it was a time of mass unemployment and depression, the 2nd WW changed this country into to something good, their is a hell of a lot of decent people in this country, the chav, immigrants, criminals are in a minority, hence whey this country still ticks, some of you make me sick they way you talk. We've had our problems but I am not ashamed to say I am English/British.

People slate Labour but any government in power gets slated, Brown has done well, hes handled the recession well and the banks but its just the British ability to moan which I love to hate.

For the people that keep referring to Britain as England, which a lot of people seem to do, its not... Britain is not England. England is a country in Britain, along with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Daily Mail reader? all that you have listed I don't know anybody who comes across that. I bet you would love to tell kids to give up hope and that the best way is to do nothing.

You might as well die now because you are just going to be unhappy forever.

I'm proud of the accomplishments this country had made over it's history, especially in the area of engineering and innovation.

I'm proud of what Britain was, and could potentially be again.

At the same time I criticize it's current failings - from the overly-boozed up let's have a fight culture, tot he chav culture, to certain sections of society being overly dependant on the benefits system, to the way our government has been recently with the new police and nanny state laws, to the utter disdain shown by the government towards motorists, their general dislike towards engineers (because engineers know how things such as the road network should work - rather than politicians who want to run it in a way that will get them the most votes).

Overall, I'm proud to call myself British ... even though I see far too many problems with the country and the current British society.

I'm no historian but the highland clearances, religious persecution, child labour in the textile mills, and the execution of shell shocked soldiers springs to mind as examples.

The class system, the old boy network and the royals have crapped on a lot of Brits over time. Why did so many leave for America? Why did all the colonies get sick of the crown?

You are not free under British rule, you are a serf.
