this makes me sick

Would make more sense if they abolished the vehicle excise duty tax (road tax to you and me) and just included that in the cost of petrol.

Then the government would have a pay-as-you-drive scheme. The more you drive, the more petrol you use. The more you use, the more you buy. The more you buy, the more £££ the government gets.

Oh, and if the govt. is reading this... it's my idea, and I want 10% of all profits thankyouverymuch.

They are planing to sell the motorways to the banks.

I feel sorry for the people who drive properly, unfortunately that's about 1%. The majority drive like idiots - if they drove sensibly they could easily save far more money that this fuel rise would cost them. I don't understand why the police can't ban "boy racers" on the spot, load of ****ers

Why would they ban boy racers?

Two reasons the government keeps them (and other hapless morons on the roads):
1. They drive a lot, and drive very uneconomically. This means they need to buy lots of fuel, and thus put lots of £££ in the government coffers.
2. If all hapless morons were removed from the roads altogether, they wouldn't be paying VED, fuel duty, etc. Where would the government make up this lost revenue? Raise the cost of driving for the rest of us by 600% to compensate?

This is, of course, assuming that "hapless morons" and "boy racers" encompass over 50% of the driving population, which I believe they do.

yet if you notice, in shops, the VAT has slowly been put back on, many items here have gone back to .99p endings just to round the prices, but most items, after a month went back to original prices, and very few people noticed, quite frankly, i'd forgotten about the VAT drop till you mentioned it, that's what's interesting to me >.<

yep seen that too, showed a recipt of an item when i got the discount went back in june and the price was up.

Whelp, we're boned [/Bender]

I'm not one to get sensationalist, but I repeatedly get the feeling our government has descended into a 'fix things that are broken now for good headlines' mantra rather than planning for the long term.

How long have we got left before they have to call an election?

They only have till next year.

This will come one month before the expected date of a general election.

Labour know their not going to win so they don't care.
They also know that the opposition will protest at how bad all this tax is, when they get in power, they won't change a thing.

How much does petrol and desiel sales actually raise per annum for the exchequer?

If I recall previous %,
income tax roughly paid for the biggest bill which was social security
High end tax and NI paid for NHS
corporate tax paid for the MOD
and the rest was mostly debt.

I was amazed at how little was actually gained from corporate tax within the UK when compared with income tax.
Must see if I can dig out the proper figures again, as it was interesting to see the two pies of income versus expenditure.

-edit i was wrong corporate tax was even less than I thought

Well I guess it's swings and roundabouts here. Income tax is probably a bit more elastic than corporation tax, essentially if you hike up corporation tax it's more likely to force 20% of companies out of the UK, if you did the same to income tax 20% are hardly likely to move en mass.

Shops use RRP or SRP - Recommended or Suggested Retail Price. Basically means they can price any item at any price they want, within reason. Manufacturer's costs have gone up anyway, which doesn't help.
