For that kind of moolah I think you could have bought a lot more bang. Did you at least get it with the 1920x1080 RGBLED LCD? That will ameliorate matters, since I hear it's the most spectacular available on any laptop on the market. It might not pack a punch but everything will look rich and sparkly, which if you're not gaming or rendering as you say then its a major plus.

yes, 1080p rgbled.

i honestly dont think its that bad. i shopped around and couldnt find anything with the same spec for the same price.

can you find me a laptop with:

1080p
ddr 3 ram
metal alloy case (mostly)
2.4ghz core 2
256gb SSD HDD
bluray
blutooth / wifi / webcam etc
under 3kgs?

for £1200?
 
I love my Studio XPS 16 but I paid half what you did by buying from the online dell outlet store and then bought a SSD separately (spec was otherwise the same as yours assuming you got the full 1080P RGBLED display).

Not sure if you are too late to cancel but you could save a good chunk of money by looking in the outlet store.

Great laptop, does run hot but it's only an issue if you rest it on your lap to play games.

They do keep appearing on the outlet, it gets refreshed every day.

My estimated time was 15 days but it came in 5 :)

Ricky1981, do you have the 3670 or the 4670? how hot does yours run on load?
Mine gets scorchio, I have had to undervolt the cpu and apply AS5 to stop the CPU hitting 93c and downclocking
 
I picked up a Dell Studio XPS 16 about a month ago with all the bells and whistles. To be honest, I was a bit worried about the heat issue aswell but when under medium load, its warm but not hot enough to burn your lap. Gaming on the other hand.... you better be on a desk or you are going to smell burning flesh :eek:

Spec:

Core2 T9600 2.8Ghz
8GB DDR3 RAM
256GB SSD
4670 1GB
Blue-ray reader combo drive
Intel 5300 wifi
TV Tuner
Internal HSDPA
16.0" RGBLED Screen 1920x1080
Standard 6cell Battery + 9cell

A few points:

-The SSD is a well worth upgrade, helps the laptop run a bit cooler. Hovers around 43C when idle currently.
-The 16" RGBLEG screen is WELL worth the extra. Its absolutely fantastic.
-Make sure you get a extra 9cell battery if you are going to be on the move a lot. My standard 6cell lasts only 2hours 50mins with wifi off and 2hours 15mins with it on browsing. A 9cell nearly doubles that.
-The trackpad does get very warm when gaming or working on extreamly large PS files or renders.
-The gloss finish is a fingerprint magnet
-The keyboard is one of the best I have used on a laptop

Load temps as far as I've recorded during a long and intensive TF2 session (with multicore enabled):

CPU: 72
GPU: 63
HDD: 51

Ordered on the 9th of August, delivered on the 17th. Brilliant customer service too and they kept me up to date at every stage of the order.

I'm looking to buy one of these, I want the highest res for movies etc but 1920x1200 would be too small for a 16" screen I thought?

Can I ask how much you paid for your unit?

Ah, misunderstood you there. Laptop is running at 1920x1080 and I find it perfect for a 16" screen. I do a lot of photo editing and design work so screen real estate was a very important factor.

I got it for a reasonable £2094 with a few freebies. I did have to haggle hard and resort to speaking to the manager on a few occasions.

PS, the resolution is perfect for watching a blue-ray or 2. The RGBLED screen really comes into its own then.

Speaking to a company on the bay that deal with cancelled Dell orders as new condition, he is offering this for approx £850, tempted but still thinking it over, I like higher res on the desktop as I like the space, it's got the grunt for some gaming too if I fancy it?

Tip: buy one with the SSD, sell it on the bay (£450), replace with normal 7200 from OCUK.
 
I blame the 8GB of RAM for the price (2x 4GB). Was a £400 option IIRC but necessary in my case.

That's a pretty damn good deal there. Be sure to check if the RGBLED screen is the 1920 resolution as last month they had the option to specify RGBLED with 720p res.

The 3670 is roughly half the performance of the 4670 and runs a bit hotter but should be fine for most games if you known down the resolution a notch.

Also get a spare 6/9cell battery if your on the move a lot.
