Guitar Hero vs the Guitar

Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith and Travis Barker all had heavy input into the development of the drums for guitar hero IV. A quick google will find you many developer videos working with them.

Look, without getting into a massive argument again, the game might teach you minimal basics on what the bass pedal is/does and how to hold sticks for a certain type of genre, but like mentioned this is only brief, and im sure these pro drummers would agree that if anybody wanted to learn drums that they should honestly break off and go and learn with a real teacher.

I don't think anyone has argued against that point, i know i haven't. What we were arguing against is your statement that these games teach you no basics what so ever which you seem to be agreeing with now so i have nothing to really argue about anymore :)

right well ok if like you say they teach you basics of that nature fine, i was wrong to a certain extent, BUT my argument was anybody who thinks playing gh/rb drums is like the real thing is wrong, as its so different!

Completely true.

Anyone who takes any game seriousely in terms of real life skill, from Guitar Hero/Rock Band to Flight Simulators or Racing games, is clinicaly insane.

So now i've completed Batman: Arkam Asylum i'm not ready to be a caped crime fighter?

that was my argument from watching that video of the lad playing run to the hills, from playing a game, from me have a lot of experience in drumming (not bigheaded) to watch that kid, it was pretty painful to watch. it just sounded too machine like, it wasnt pretty.

Well after look at a screen for flashing lights telling you everthing to do, taking that away will probably do that.

Then I prefer that to people who a bit...too into it, people like Angelo Batio, or how Steve Vai used to be before he got old.

i take it seriously when people believe you can learn an instrument from playing a game.

Learn? Nope, but it's dumb to say drumming on expert level in Rock Band/GH doesn't help you with the real thing. (in some way)

Well, people who play drums IRL and the games admit it does help!

Edit: I am not saying it means you will be an uber 1337 drummer, but it does help you with foot pedal work. That said remembering all the rhythms for songs must be an utter bitch.

the thing is though drumming is about groove, and getting into it, not too extreme though, but that kid was clueless to what was around him :(

I play drums in real life, its pretty much all i do :)

and i have to disagree! but thats my opinion isnt it.

thing is you fall into bad habits when not being taught properly, i went through a stage with drums, which i posted on here about severe bruising to my legs from falling into bad technique from playing so much, and had to go see an old teacher to help me get out of it.

I know you do I saw your bands MySpace. :)

My cousins friends, friend plays drums and the games, I was asking him a few days ago if playing at expert level would help in anyway if I ever decided to play drums, he pretty much just told me that the foot pedal stuff will help build a muscle and give you a good stepping stone but the rest is quite a bit different.

Losing your rhythm in the games is a bitch, can be hard to get back on it even with the chart helping you so it's definitely a LOT different in real life, but I think there are some things you can learn from it.

oh sure yea, it will build up your muscles in your body, you use different muscles when drumming compared to other activites to build up muscle mass, so expect so aches and pains.

one of the lads in the band goes on my kit when he gets bored in practice if im chilling for 5mins, and it tires him our so much, which is really bizarre he gets tired after a few minutes!

by no means am i not wanting people to learn to play the drums, if you want to do it go for it, im all up for everyone learning as it changed my life, but please go down the real path and keep the game for fun :)

Yep definitely had some aches and pains a few times today! I mean 2 days ago I couldn't separate my feet from my hands but now I am picking it up quite quickly.

I do intend to get a real drum set but not right now, sometime next year when I have some more money. Just gonna use the games to work on my footwork for time being!

I got quite tired after doing Seek and Destroy on expert, I was worn out by the end. :(

i can see how single pedal might be beneficial, but the double pedal must be a bitch to learn on the game, especially to build up speed.

Hmm not too sure, I mean some of the songs have extremely quick pedal work and some people plug in an extra pedal to help with it, but I've been told that everything is doable with one pedal with practice.

That's one of the songs I hear a lot of people have been going with dual pedals for, I am getting quite good at doing blasts (is that the name?) on the single pedal in quick succession but I am having issues slowing down then getting back into it.

But I'll keep practicing. :)

yeah blast beats, yeah that would require double pedal for that track.

I've read the thread from start to finish and don't have much to add that hasn't already been said but, I've been a guitar teacher for around 5 years now and have gotten a lot of students who said they became interested in learning from playing Guitar Hero.

Anything which can get people interested in music, whether it's 'just' hitting keys in rhythm is OK in my opinion. At the end of the day I can't see the 'real' guitar dying out any time soon.

As a guitarist I can understand it's sometimes frustrating when people are impressed at other people's guitar hero skills, it's the same argument as a guy who can play 3 chords to a song everyone knows and loves being considered 'better'/more entertaining than someone who is a better player but does not appeal to the masses. The goals of both are completely subjective, as already mentioned, Guitar Hero is to the most a bit of fun, it's interesting and curious how parallels aren't drawn between other game genres such as racing/sports/warfare when essentially the same argument could be applied there.
