Did you have to un-install any drivers or anything, or just put the hardware in and stick the motherboard's disk in afterwards to install its drivers?

Nope just swapped the board over and it went in fine. Once it got to desktop, after a few mins it said I needed to reboot (the graphics were low res) and after that it was spot on.

Great news! My only reason for holding off on building a system now was that I'd have to re-install twice in two months.

Did you install a new graphics card at the same time as the new mobo, chip and RAM? If not, would you recommend that I put the new mobo etc in with my old GPU, then uninstall the GPU and its drivers and then install the new GPU.

Or should I just do it all at once, and uninstall the old graphics card, then whip it out along with the old mobo and chip, then put all the new stuff in together?

EDIT: Judging from the above I think I'll be ordering myself a new cooler at the same time as I order the i5 :D

I have never seen this before, tried reinstalling, and tried 2 different sets of drivers, quite odd. It did this on both my old and my fresh install of W7, yet the AMD setup I originally had on the old install, did not do this, I put it down to me setting the board up on a none clean OS, but now that I have a totally fresh install, I'm puzzled.

It doesn’t ‘really’ matter that much, everything else I have tried works fine, It’s just a bit annoying as I wanted to try and draw a comparison with my old setup. I also don’t like it when something does not work and I can’t figure out why.

I did a little reading regarding this, but the error seems to only be documented as a Vista error, and the usual fix can't be applied in this case, as I can't apply DEP values to a 64bit executable according to W7.
 
Trying to get some OC results but the board is very confusing & the new bits on the i5/i7 Core are new to me (BLK etc). The Asus OC did a self test and found 3.47GHz by itself which is quite promising for an auto-OC result on 'good performance' (there are higher options).

Nope just new board, cpu, memory. I would suggest leaving the current gfx card in and just change what I did and then if thats works (should do), uninstall gfx drivers and shut down to change the gfx card over separately.

Yep, that strikes me as the best way of doing it too...it's not too important, will only have to last a month and I'm on holiday for a week and a half of it! As long as it's fairly stable I'll be happy. Probably won't be OCing my chip until I do a nice full reinstall though.
 
Manual OC to 3.2GHz fails - gets to 80c on Realtemp ^

Going to have to wait for the Noctua I think.
 
Hey Guys, just an FYI. Our (CoolIT Systems) i5 bracket is instock at OCUK and the guys should be sku'ing it up shortly.

From what I am hearing out there.. people are going to 4.2 and beyond on our Domino ALC. Haven't heard what they are getting on the Elite yet... could be scary good though.

75C at stock that is as hot as i7 920 at stock which also has extra load from hyperthreading, what is going on I thought these chips were 95W TDP?

Yea but the stock cooler is tiny, that's the only reason they are running that hot, most of us are using the stock coolers as we haven't got the correct fittings for our current after market coolers or are perhaps waiting for some new ones to come out.

What does OCCT say when Realtemp says 80C?

Still not sure that's not a core temp. Differences? For starters the maximum Tcase is 5C higher. TDP 35W lower (not that it means anything) SLBEJ vs SLBLC

A little over 80c, maybe 82-84c.

Got a ghetto mod of a desk fan blowing into the case, so going to try again now and see how it gets on.



edit: Currently sat at 70c full load on OCCT @ 3.2GHz. Both OCCT and Real Temp are within 1-2c of each other. This is 1.3v on CPU, 1.65v on DDR3, everything else is default.

edit 2: Temps went up to 80c and OCCT stopped itself due to the limit on the temp. These stock heatsinks are utterly useless for even mild overclocking :)

edit 3: Looks like the temps could be caused by the increased IMC voltage which was set to auto. Default is 1.10v but I gather from reviews that increasing this puts a lot more heat through the chip. Running auto it was 1.20v so I've put forced it back to default volts.

Then your temps are no where near as bad as it appears. The maximum case temp is 72.7°C and the 80C you're looking at is the coretemp. Hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs, but they're very different things. Be more concerned with the distance to Tjmax. 20C to Tjmax is safe enough, but not great obviously..
