BMW 116i M Sport

Both have the smokers package, which would indicate that both previous owners smoked in their cars, which means I'd not want either.

It indicates nothing of the sort, virtually all BMW's are specced with the smokers pack as its a free option and some people think (wrongly) that without it you cant power satnavs etc.

I bet your 330d has the smokers pack ;)

Is it not like the VWs, where the non-smokers package cars have more handy cubbyholes/cupholders in place of the ashtrays? I'd rather have cubbys personally :)

Doesn't the smokers pack just give you a cupholder ashtray and lighter in the socket instead of a cap?

Who cares if it has the pack, if you go see the car and it doesn't smell and there's no staining would you still not buy it?

the new 118d is underpowered, so i'd hate to think what the pre-facelift one was like, so stay away from those!

i'd get the 120d, but with better spec
also look at the competition, vw, audi..

Why would you not get the 120d out of those?

It's got the better engine, and is a grand cheaper! Apart from that they're essentially the same car.

Why do you get charged VAT on number plates? :(

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a tax that's charged on most goods and services that VAT-registered businesses provide in the UK. It's also charged on goods and some services that are imported from countries outside the European Union (EU), and brought into the UK from other EU countries.

VAT is charged when a VAT-registered business sells to either another business or to a non-business customer.

The engine is just one peice though isnt it. After that kind of miles, and once its probably been through a few owners the car is probably going to be sha$$ed unless its been cared for very very well throughout its life - which to be honest isn't likely to be the case. The interior trim will be worn, the seat bolsters are likely to be a bit saggy, the car is going to feel pretty worn.

I'm lucky in that I can afford to buy the car I want, at a decent spec level and engine choice without needing to go very old. My choice, your choice. And no, I dont drive a 116 lol ;)

Interior might be worn, but interiors aren't overly hard to swap out, time consuming maybe to do it right but pretty easy compared to some jobs.
Suspension, clutch, not the easiest jobs but doable.
Brakes don't phase me, i enjoy disc brakes, simple work.

Buying a low mileage car seems a waste of money and unappealing seeing as it's likely to be stop start town miles.

Think about it, john who does 10k miles a year round town isn't going to be concerned with servicing, engine efficiency or maintainance too much. Add to that stop and start driving it stresses the components.

But brian who does 30k miles a year as a commuter is going to care much more about his mpg, and keeping the car in efficient working order because thats a lot of driving to be doing he wants to save as much money as possible. So he'll get it serviced and sorted out when needed and drive smoother to save the cash.

I prefer the latter, cheaper in the long run as long as you give it a good old look over, it's got a full service history, it's a solid investment.

I drove a brand new 120i today. It made me realise I've been spoilt as it was completely underhwelming and all the new trickery in it compared to my car I just found annoying. Indicator stalks that don't stay "clicked" and a motor that cut out at the lights every time I put it in neutral and stuck the handbrake on. And the radio looked like it hadn't moved on since my old E46, which would have been 10 years old now. :(
