*** Crucial M225 SSD's Available From £102.99 inc VAT ***

Going to be ordering one of these, is there anything I need to get/do in order to use its full potential. I am using windows 7 by the way.

Couldn't be bothered to read through 34 pages sorry!

(getting the 64gig one)

For Windows 7 I think you just need to disable Indexing on the SSD partition. Defrag should already be disabled by default.

2x64gb in RAID0 will be faster. But I doubt you'd notice the performance over a single 128gb, and you'll have to wait longer for TRIM support - if it's ever implemented for RAID.

Imo I don't think TRIM will ever work on RAID0 configurations. ICHxR architecture is a closed system and I can't see Intel investing man hours into making Indilinx Barefoot drives support TRIM in RAID.

Quite happy to be proven wrong though. :)

Intel makes SSD's too you know ;)

Anyway, Intel has already said they'll be updating drivers to pass through TRIM commands (saw it mentioned in one of Anand's recent articles). What isn't known is which controllers will be getting the update. ICH10R is a given. Previous controllers we'll just have to wait and see.

...And Crucial have said on their forums that they (read Indilinx) will be working on TRIM support for RAID after they have got it working for single drives.

Here's hoping :)

Latest word (official) from Crucial:

Indilinx is diligently working to finalize a firmware update to support the TRIM command in Windows 7 for the Crucial M225 series solid-state drive. We received a new version today, and our lab is putting it through our validation and test process.

We understand the frustrations expressed here in the forum. We have this as our top priority and are making every effort to make this available as quickly as possible. Once we have validated the firmware update we will post it to our support site. We will also post an announcement here that the update is available.

Not long now...

Which is why I said Indilinx Barefoot, which Intels ones aren't. ;)

I assumed you must not know that to make the revelation that Intel won't waste man hours getting ICHxxR to pass TRIM to RAIDed Indilinx drives. For your claim to hold any water, the ICHxxR would not be able to pass TRIM to RAIDed Intel SSD's either, hence why I might assume you don't know Intel make SSD's too, as you're suggesting (unwittingly, perhaps) that Intel won't support their own TRIM compatible devices ;)

That would be a most odd situation for Intel, being a member of T13, the technical committee that proposed the new industry standard ATA specification include TRIM.

As already mentioned, the only doubt is which ICH-R will get the update.

Another update:

The new firmware will not support garbage collection. We will offer a user initiated garbage collection tool following the release of the new firmware.

Although Indilinx released a Beta firmware with OCZ which supports what they call “active” garbage collection we are still evaluating the feature and do not plan to included it in the upcoming release. The two main issues to evaluate are: 1) the effect on power consumption as the drive continues to work during what would be idle time, 2) the effects to endurance of the drive, from the additional erase and writes during the active garbage collection process.

So to summarize, active garbage collection is under evaluation, but will not be included in the upcoming firmware release.

At this time it is that a firmware upgrade from will reformat the SSD in the process. Even if that changes for the final version, we still strongly recommend that you back up all data on the SSD before doing the upgrade.

SSD's lose performance over time as the cells are written to. Wiper/Trim fixes this performance loss. Wiper has to be run manually every so often, Trim will be automatic and supported in Windows 7. The new firmware will add Trim support, and it's looking like it will be a destructive flash so I'd probably wait.

Ok thank you...So wiper/trim are the same thing?

Trim being the auto version supported within 7?

Vista id have to use wiper running it manuallly?

edit:

Is trim built into the firmware and i have to use a app which works along side it running in the background?....or is it all done within the firmware/drive?

Trim support will be in the newer firmware they will be releasing soon and as long as you're running Windows 7 you won't have to do anything else, it will be taken care of by Windows 7.

If you use an older OS you'll have to run wiper manually every so often.
