Eagle F1 Asymmetric: Not Impressed!!

I actually checked today to ensure there wasn't a rogue fitment, ie one the wrong way around but all was good. I have not checked the pressures, relying on the fitter to get that right but I will and I need to give them a few more miles before I make the call.

255/35/R19 XL is the spec and I was told R is the new ZR, can anyone confirm this please?

R is the diameter of the wheel the tyre fits in the size you show above. As you know they other number and letter like "93Y" is the load and speed rating of the tyre.

I was under the impression that the GSD3 was replaced by the Asymmetric over a certain size.

Do they use the same compound as the Asymmetrics?

I though the difference was the tread pattern, GSD3's use the V-tread design.

I have the Asymmetrics on the front of my ST220 and the V-tread GSD3's on the back...faultless set up for me

P-Zero are about the quietest tyre on the market, hence why they are the most popular tyre in the Mercedes world. Very impressed with them on the Porsche and will be endeavoring to get a set for my S-class when mine are next due.

Therefore i am not surprised that you find the Goodyear's noisy. Surprised by the performance thing though, they pretty much sacrifice noise and longevity for it and are the positive point of this tyre as far as i can see.

Surprised by this also, although again, I have the GSD3's and not the newer one's. But my car came with the P-Zero tyres and I hated them in the wet. Grip in the dry was good though. Stuck on the GSD3's regardless and all is well now. My dad has the GSD3's on his Audi S4 also, and he has had no complaints.

You may need to increase the tyre pressure slightly to account for the softer sidewall.

Might help with the understeering/wash out issue

I've recently bought an SLK that still has the original P-Zeroes on the rear, and the road noise from them is very loud, cruising along at 60-70 it drowns out the lovely V6 noise :( Not overly bothered really, I put this down to the cabin probably not as well insulated against noise as an E/S-Class and sitting closer to the rear tyres as well.

I was considering replacing them with F1s, but if they're much noisier I might stick with P-Zero. Besides, I can always drop down a gear or two, open up the throttle and the engine soon makes the noise disappear :D

F1s are noisy, seriously deal with it.

The lack of grip is not surprising either as it seems the OP has been hooning it on brand new tyres, rather then letting them bed in before stretching the legs on his RS4. Give them 300 miles and reassess the grip situation, you may be pleasantly surprised!

On the Golf GTi PS2's were utter rubbish, had to bin them asap before they binned my car - although I am told they are pretty good on BMWs. Conti's CS3s still get my vote for best all round performance/longevity, but the F1s cannot be matched especially in the rain!

My RS4 gets driven quite hard as it's very easy to grab it by the balls and drive it hard, much like my previous M cars but the tyres had 300 miles on them before I opened the taps properly. I will give them a few more miles but I have driven it no different to how I did when it had new P Zero's and they were better. I have done 45K miles in this car so it's not as if I am just getting used to it, I know its traits and vices very well.

Will up the tyre pressures a little and see if that helps as suggested above.

Need a 500+ on them before you benefit.

Go scrub the hell out of them.

Housey, can I ask how you find the Rs4?

My shortlist is:

Cayman S
997 Carrera S
RS4
E90 M3

The RS4 is wining at the minute, I prefer the "idiot proof ness" of AWD and after driving a friends the M3 I find in scarily tail happy even at 5/10's, dont think I would ever be comfortable pushing it in one of those.

Still need to drive the Porsches

I drove a couple of the new M3's recently (John Thorney's modded car and a mates manual coupe) and also did a back to back with my RS4 and a loan car from my local BMW dealer on the same roads in the same conditions a few weeks back and I think the RS4 is a better all round road car. It's not quite as quick and the engine in the M3 is more special but cross country and certainly in the wet you would find the RS4 in a different league. It simply puts its power down, in any conditions and in any weather with ease, it is quite simply astonishing on this front. It is also a very easy car to drive quickly and is pretty safe and viceless. Sure it understeers when pushed hard and feels nose heavy but its a very clever and very quick road car.

I'd take both Porsches over one however and I think I'd probably take an M3 over one as I think the RS4 lacks a certain something I can't put my finger on but being totally objective, as a road car, it craps over the others from a great height in all round ability....but its not as special.

Housey, what did you have on there before?

Hmm, scrub that - just re-read the OP :p

A few guys on IRC haven't been impressed with the F1-As. Have you had any experience of PS2s?

ZR just means that it's rated over 150mph. it's still used, usually in conjunction with W or Y.

you tried sportcontact 3s?

Sport contact 3s were the same on my Octavia vRS, took around 500miles I thought I had made a mistake a first.

I ran PS2's on both my M's and my GT3 and thought they were a very good tyre and the Mk2 PS2's were an improvement over the Mk1's that came with my first M3. I rate the PS2's (no matter what a few magazines might imply) as I feel they suit a high performance car and have the strongest sidewall out there I understand. However, they are bloody pricy and I didn't think £90 a corner over the GY's was a good use of my money right now, though hindsight suggests I might be wrong. The P Zero's on the RS4 seemed to work well but I will give the GY's a few more miles before I make a final judgement.
