*** Crucial M225 SSD's Available From £102.99 inc VAT ***

Sounds good, to install this firmware would this require a format/reinstall of windows as I have my ssds here waiting and planned on installing them with win7 this weekend - not sure if I should wait a bit?

Ta :)

We don't know that yet. We hope to get an answer from a Crucial rep soon. However it is likely (but not certain) that upgrading from 1571 will NOT wipe the SSD. But if you can, wait. It's just a few more days, unless of course, you like to install Windows over and over :p

It's not the install I don't like, it's having to backup all my work and then reinstall all the programs/copy work back thats the time consuming bit! (I can only really do it at weekends due to constantly being harassed to do work in the week!).

Will see how I feel on Sat :)

Do we reckon going from 1711 to 1571 will wipe the SSD?

as I am one of the handful that is still running 1711.

still can't decide wether to buy 2 x 64gb in raid-0 or get 1 128gb, price difference is negligible

I have gone for 1 x 128 less can go wrong with a single drive - easier to update firmware, trim support etc etc

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere; I couldn't find a straightforward answer.

Is garbage collection essentially "automated TRIM"? If your SSD and OS both support TRIM, and you've never used the drive without active TRIM support (i.e., on a different OS, or with an older firmware), would garbage collection be unnecessary? In other words, if TRIM is and always has been active on your drive, would there be no work for garbage collection to do?

Looking to get one of these drives for my new build. But I'd want TRIM support before going for it, I think.

im going for this option too.

simpler setup and i dont think the gain from raid would be noticable.

I'm running RAID on the larger drives, but I did run one on it's own for a week or so at first. For most things it's hardly noticeable.

Also remember, as single drives, that the 128/256gb drives are slightly faster than the 64gb ones - and RAID won't help as much for smaller reads and writes (i.e. files smaller than RAID stripe size).

Thanks for the updates rs, saving me a job of looking on the Crucial forums - which I find very sloooowww.

TRIM is automated and relies on your OS, IDE/AHCI/RAID drivers and drive firmware all supporting it. GC is slightly different in that it is on the drive only, so works on all OS's but IIRC only works during a period of inactivity.

TBH SSDs are so fast even when used, when compared to a HD, that you probably won't notice much of a difference. I certainly didn't when I was running Wiper - which is a kind of manual TRIM.

It might be safe to wait til the new firmware is out - which should support TRIM in single drive mode - but if it isn't I wouldn't let that put you off getting an SSD.

Still no update on stock?

I posted a note in the CS forum on Tuesday when the 64g drives where back in stock asking if crucial had given a date on delivery of 128g drives and got the following reply

Crucial aren't giving us any firm information whatsoever so it would be wrong of me to tell you otherwise. They are just shipping small amounts of each and we are simply getting what we are given.

Seems fair enough, am quite sure OC would love the drives to be in stock as I am sure they would sell.

Yeah, you've got to wonder how many they've got on a list for pre-orders as it is.

Here's hoping Crucial are holding back a large amount until the new firmware has completed QA.

Hope so, I was perusing there own forum the other day and somebody was complaining that they wanted to buy an ssd direct from them and they had none in stock (uk site)

EDIT: also noticed that they have bumped the price up by £20 which is why I pre-ordered mine from OC whilst they are still the cheapest

Monday morning bump ;)

Still no drives BUT the prices have moved

64g £102.99 to £114.99
128g £214.99 to £222.99

Cannot remember what the 256g was

Prices still very competitive ocuk; good for you

I don't know whether to just preorder one from OcUK or wait until stock of these actually surfaces.

I'd really like to get a new SSD to replace my OCZ Core with the launch of Windows 7.

If none are around by the 22nd, I'll just cave and get a Vertex instead I think.

Im looking at a 64GB one too and am tempted to preorder but not sure if my funds will allow it haha. Want to wait til they're back in stock but then theres the chance they'll sell out straight away.... tricky!!
