'Classic' games you just can't get into

Half Life.

I KNOW I'm going to be shot down in flames by all and sundry - but - I just couldn't get into it at all. I could never get the motivation to get out of Black Mesa, whether it was due to frustration or just general "meh, this doesn't seem this great so far" feeling when I'd been told by everyone that it's the best thing ever.

I've reinstalled it so many times I can't remember, and each time have got to similar points and just gave up again.

I got slightly further in HL2 (which I actually purchased prior to release, and I think was one of the first to post on here stating it'd been unlocked and was off to start playing it!) - I got just past the riverboat - prior to losing my savegame and again losing motivation.

So - the Half-Life series gets my vote for this thread.

Starcraft would be mine.

People rave about it, it usually ends up in the top 10 on top 100 game lists. But for me it was just total meh...not because of the game really though, but because I really just dont like the real time "strategy" genre anyway. The whole churn out dozens and dozens of a unit and just swarm across the map with them doesnt do anything for me. I barely consider it "strategy".

So...not the fault of the game, more because I dislike the genre. Its merely a high profile name in the genre that I see bandied a lot.

C&C Red Alert and I loved C&C
Same here. They just seem to be lacking all of the fun tactical online gameplay I got from C&C, particularly Tiberian Sun.

Any of the "Total War" games every produced!?!?!?!

Every one gets amazing scores in all the mags but I just cant get into them!!!!

StevieP
I could never get into the Total War games either, not sure why as I thought they would be something I'd like.

Another one for me is the Call of Duty games. CoD 1 way okay, pretty good but not amazing, but all the games after just seem like generic boring shooters completely lacking in originality and made only for the ADD console crowd. Maybe it's just me

...And I agree about Spore, but I definitely wouldn't call it a classic!

Deus ex gets another vote...i remember playing the demo and thinking wow....but when i finally did buy the game i just didnt find any of it fun after the first level.

i have reinstalled it a few times aswell but i never really get past that 1 level.

Spore. Just naff.

Mass effect. I SHOULD like it. but when I worked out the game was going to demand months -- just kind of lost interest.

Doom3 expansion. I loved doom 3. Then played the expansion for 5 minutes and got bored. Go figure!!

Fear 2. Bought at the same time as other games. Always a mistake for me. I choose the game I like best (within 10 minutes) and don't play any of the others. Ever!

Battlefield 2142. Battle field 1942 controlled my life for 18 months -- battlefield 2142 - didn't like. Its something about the fact the weapons arnt real and the vehicles don't exist in real life -- for that kind of game -- I just find a turn off.

Another for Supreme Commander, and totally agree with the OP - it's dull.

Deus Ex was stunning in it's day, and I still think it's worth a play if you've never seen it, but good grief - the AI is shockingly poor (played it about a year back). Back in it's day it probably seemed great, but now...

Can't think of something that hasn't been mentioned off the top of my head.

Mass Effect isn't that big really - it certainly doesn't take anywhere near months, and if you stick to the core plot, it's really quite short considering the type of game it is.

Civ4.

Never could get into it, every game ended in a space race, and it was either easy to way too hard.

Not a classic but Dead Space doesn't do it for me. The whole third person perspective coupled with frustratingly bad camera angles and mouse lag makes the game terrible.
That said I haven't yet patched it, and perhaps the console version is better but I can't even get past the tutorial part without struggling to keep playing.

Just comes across as an over-hyped piece of tat to be honest.

-Rome Total War - a little too overwhelming, I couldn't really bring myself to play beyond the tutorial
-Most RPGs e.g. FF7, NWN, Mass Effect... I tend to spend a couple of hours just setting up characters etc but play very little of the actual game
-Oblivion, again I spent hours researching and downloading 5GB of mods, barely got out of the dungeon before I gave up on it. Loved FO3 though so if I was able to download that big update thing I'd give it another try.
-Most driving sims e.g. Race07 etc

Oblivion is the only one i can really think of
Never had the chance to play the Final Fantasy series, so i cant say

X3.

Id love to love the game, after a while i get bored traveling around, time consumpion is just too great for the time i get to play games.

Metalgear soild 4, the custscenes just kill it for me:(

Diablo

Torturously awful game. Only play it if you hate your mouse and your life.

Half-Life

If you played it when it came out it was a total revelation. Actiony, Survivaly, Horrory, loverly. It made all previous efforts (quake,Q2, unreal) look like lame generic shooters.

Looking back, half-life seems like just an above average shooter, it may have introduced loads of gameplay elements that have been the staple in last decade, but it no longer exites much. Kind of the Citizen Kane of shooters.

If you approach deus-ex the way you do most shooters, it's appalling and was at the time as well. The enemy are so dumb the some times run into walls until they die. The graphics were also sub-par for the time

The Tao of Deus-Ex isn't in going in commando, although no-ones stopping you. Its more fun to carefully probe enemy defences, work out all the possibilites, then ninja/hacker/sewer-rat your way to the objective. It's possible to complete the game without killing anyone

Deus Ex, Ive reinstalled this game so many times but it just does absolutely nothing for me. So many PC gamers love it but try as I might Ive never been able to get more than an hour or two in without getting bored :(.
+1 Just couldn't get into it.

Just to let you know, 'they are' contracts to 'they're' not there.

Also, 'we're' is a contraction of 'we are', 'were' is a word in its own right.

Just FYI - if you're going to use the term I've, you need to capitalise the 'I'

Haha I couldn't resist :)

Is the tfti jesus pic still banned? :D

I can see where some are coming from with Deus Ex. I loved it back when it came out, but thought id give it another run through a while back and found it had dated pretty badly. Then again, most games don't hold up well to the test of time.

*puts on rose-tinted glasses * Still an awesome game though:)

WoW...

click... wait... click... wait... press 3... wait... wait...

30 million players worldwide!!!!

but i know what you mean i tryed the free trial of this and i hated it!!! no way would this game be worth £10pm to me, i feel ripped of after the free trial :)

i prefer the classic diablo style game, have gone back to playing D2-LOD for about a week now and its going ok but its just not near as fun as it used to be :( NEED NEW GAMES!!!!

I need to go back and play deus ex without any kills. I know the game really well, so could probably do it. Tranquiliser crossbow for great justice.

Mass effect - only Bioware game that's never hooked me - (maybe if i try it again it'll hook)

Half life 2 - loved the first one (up to Xen anyway) - had high hopes of HL2 but just got bored

Fallout 3 - a truly dull game (oblivion with guns )

DIE!!!!!!!

Only joking. I actually never got into HL1 either and wasn't going to bother with HL2 until the hype got to me. For me it's the greatest game I've ever played and still thoroughly enjoyable to this day. It does start a bit slow but from the second hour or so in things get interesting.
