You only connect to one node.
It is not like the old way where you could try to reconnect to a less busy central.

Go to http://www.entachoice.org.uk/central-checker/ and stick your router login into the box, that will then give you the node you're on.
what are you sync speeds/connections stats? Also use this speedtester instead.

This the first time you've had broadband?
Disconnect any extensions, they could be causing problems.
I would expect between 2 and 4mbit at that distance, go find your main socket, take the 2 small screws out the front and plug the router into the test socket behind.
