I have the m110, which only has a x8 slot and that clocks down to x1 as well. Can't say for sure on the AMD board, but on the Intel board this is a 'feature' of the bios, which does the same for any gpu it finds. It's a server, not a workstation, after all.

Seems potentially short sighted for a performance desktop. You may run into issues when upgrading in future (e.g., to a beefy graphics card) given the modest capacity of the CPU, and the fact it is a non-standard case means fitting an alternative would be a pain.
Not sure why i would like to upgrade the gfx card, atm it has a 8800GTS inside which is more than enough for work purposes and running vms. CPU is also more than capable of lasting 3 years. The biggest hog i use to have was the disk i/o but with a £300+ raid card and sas drives i do not think i will have that issue and cpu utilisation has dropped massively.
If i went for a performance desktop costing £2k+ i could have got two of what i have now, plus if you think about it if it does not fit i still have saved the £1k i would have spent on a desktop. unfortunatly HP do not support non branded HP parts or compatible ones so if i went unbranded i would obviously be able to have something a hell of a lot more powerful

HP ML115 (Single Opteron Quad @ 2.2ghz / 1gb RAM / 160gb SATA)... I'm looking at just over 200 quid. I'm assuming thats the going rate?
I want 8gb of RAM. What do I need?
I'm assuming ESXi runs OK? Any issues or limitations? (This is what I want the box for)
What drives will work in it? Any old SATA or something special? Ill be wanting 4 disks running non-raid with a single VM on each.
Is there anything else I need to buy?

4 slots, 2GB modules in each. ESXi, and vsphere all work fine on this box, official supported SATA HD supported by HP are the 750gb with onboard controllers. If you use non official HP kit i know this box can take 1TB WD Blacks i have not tried higher.
Internal USB port means you can run your ESX of a usb pen without using your hard disks!
£200 is the going rate but inside specs vary for that price as this is end of line product and discontinued. I was lucky enough to get 2x160GB SATA, 2GB ram and 2.2ghz. you might be able to bag the same offer or with 1gb, 1hd and maybe same or slower cpu

Quick memory question - I have 2 x 2GB memory modules fitted. I run CPU-Z, and on the memory TAB under "Channels#" it says "Single". Is this right, or have I got the modules in the wrong slots ? Can someone else run CPU-Z and see what they have ? According to the manual I am supposed to populate 1A and 2A - better open the box and take a look. The manual doesn't seem to identify the slots that well. It does say though 1A/2A/3B/4B which implies I should have my 2 RAM modules right next 2 each other. But I don't, I have them in alternate slots, so I may have just answered my own question....
EDIT: Sorted, now in two memory slots closet to CPU and CPU-Z now says Dual channel
A pity it is laid out like this, memory cooling is not as good in this configuration. Still, it should be fine, memory has a lifetime warranty anyway

Whe runing CPU-Z do you also get the grsphics link as X1 only . I do. but not sure if its because i am using windows 7 or due to hardware being a server !
i am using a Gforce 9600 GT ( pci-x V2) also tried a pci-x V1 Ati card.
or it may be due to being a server board.
My ML115 should turn up in a few days

It arrived, and all the bits worked \o/ yay (8gb RAM + 4 WDblack's). I've installed ESXi4 using the USB key method and just installing the infra client to start playing
