Supermarkets sell both the refil (in plastic) and first time buy (in wood). At least all of the ones I've been to do.So where does one get these 'old style soaps and creams'? I'd love to give them a try, get lots of grief with the supermarket rubbish.

Absolutely correct. When I do shave (rare at the moment) I'm using a ToOBS Sandlewood cream with a badger hair brush. Absolutely wonderful.In shaving newer is not always better. The old style soaps and creams are still the best way to go. Applied with a badger hair brush for best results.
At the moment I am using Taylor of Old Bond Streets Almond shaving cream. Lovely stuff.
