Operation Flashpoint 2-Dragon Rising.

Multiplayer lobby is so shoddy, spent almost an hour trying to get a game with my friend going.

It's either not logging in due to "servers being down?" or not seeing the other persons game or the friend invite taking about 5 mins to work, or you get stuck in that menu and have to wait a random time for it to come out, oh ...screw it, putting this game aside till they've fixed it :x We did manage to get in, then then my game crashed. (first time mind).

Just started playing this now, and I can say with a good degree of confidence those of you who cancelled pre-orders of seveteen whole pounds based on feedback from this forum made the wrong desicion. Unless you really don't like Singleplayer, but then this Single player feels far more multiplayer to me than any other SP game i've played.

Annoyances:

1) Having to use an Xbox 360 controller as that's blatently what the PC game has been designed around. Everything flows far better on the controller bar a rather fundemental aspect; shooting. I've found myself getting into positions and just reaching for my mouse for some of the more crucial pot shots. I really dont see how FPS gaming has taken off on consoles at all :S

2) I'm inclined to say Graphics, but they're really not that bad. Currently defending the village i've not once had the chance to think "that looks rubbish". On the contrary, with one of the armoured vehicles firing explosive rounds into the hillside, it looked rather awesome (Sounds at distance seemed pretty good too). I'm currently running everything absolutely maxed (full in the advanced, inc shadows, full ansiotropic filtering, 1920x1200) on a stock Q6600 and GTX260-216 with zero slowdowns. There is however, way too much 'grass' vegetation. Replicating the same little cutout a bazillion times does NOT make it look like real grass.

3) As has been mentioned, Helicopter sounds aren't as good as ARMA2. But they're hardly rubbish. I'm playing it with some HD555's and all the little things are adding up nicely IMO.

4) Whoever made the diagram for the radial dial control thing is an absolute chief. You really do need that thing printed on a wall next to your monitor. Untill you can do it all by heart its an absolute nightmare to find the right command before you get shot in the face.

Other points:

1) Currently in the assault on the village and it's awesome. Loads of units, ordering your fireteam about to take gun emplacements and various positions seems really easy, and all your allies seem to work with you rather than against you.

2) Infrared scope is marvellous. Especially how heat signitures 'ghost' when you move it around (I know 'Death from Above' had this in COD4 and it's equally as good from an 'on the ground' perspective)

3) Movement and fluidity is so far ahead of ARMA2 it isn't even remotely funny. Credit in part due to just how much better this game runs (You can unfortunately thank the Consoles for that one) but everything else just seems so much smoother. From basics such as running around to using your binoculars, it just feels far more polished, and FAR less clunky.

4) Voice acting. Again far better thought out than ARMA2, which just reminded me of Micheal McIntyres impression of Joules Holland. More properly pre-recorded setances just allow them to intergrate seemlessly into the game, rather than making you think "What on earth is he saying? No-one talks like that".

I think overall people really have to remember that we're still playing a computer game. We have none of the heightened senses available if we're actually stood there in a war zone with a real gun. We're interacting with a series of rendered on-screen images with a keyboard and mouse and as such NEED HELP! The best headphones, screens or gaming mice in the world can't replicate actually being somewhere.

If you're after something with more scope than COD4 or other typical First Person Shooters, but find ARMA2 just a little bit too unforgiving (Or just plain rubbish) I think you'll find a very good game in OFP : DR. For me it certainly strikes a far better balance of realism and fun.

I'l post some more findings when i've completed the SP campaign.

Think that about sums it up, nowhere near OFP more like COD4 with a gamepad (although I think COD far more engaging and enjoyable). No way it should represent itself as a milsim though and they really shouldn't have represented it as the successor to that. I think the metacritic and gamespot user review scores about fair 7ish out of 10. Scores better on the consoles, might be wort it for my PS3 when it's down to a tenner.

see this plays just how I believe COD 4 might have done if it wasnt on rails. Ok its not quuuuuite as arcady as that but in the same breath it is. Whoever said that this was a milisim was telling complete porkies.

Arma 2 in that respect holds the crown (the developers shouldnt think they have won in my view though due to it being a shoddy buggy mess - when its completely sorted then fine!)

I also think the critics on this forum have been quite hard on the game, yes the graphics arent the best but there hardly doom like are they?

They're not being hard on it for having average graphics, they're slating Codemasters for releasing vids and screenshots that are blatantly touched up and in some cases possibly hand painted by gnomes.

Managed to get another game last night after about 100 connection attempts, whilst the ping in the lobby was ok (<100) when I got into the game pretty much every action I did I had to bash the key over and over for it to register. I'd seriously have to press my prone key about 10 times before it would finally register... it wasn't like it was a lagged input, it was like if I hadn't pressed the key 10 times 9 of those inputs would be ignored.

Same with opening ammo boxes, rising to standing, getting in and out of vehicles, etc. I'd rather have lag than inputs being dropped - at least you can somewhat compensate for lag.

tl;dr: P2P SUCKS

For the first time in a few days I'm not being told I've lost my internet connection, don't know where I must have put it.

Though I can't connect to a single game, they all show as only 1 person being in the room too.

Solid gold wisdom x2

Agree 100%. People seriously need to accept this game for what it is: a more accessible stab at the mil-sim than Arma2. Running on a GTX 295 totally maxed out and I'm also using a 360 pad and it is far better playing it that way. I don't have any issue doing this either. I like the vibrations and I've always loved the design of the 360 pad anyway.

I want to highlight something else that people are forgetting here. Who has tried the mission editor yet? It is.... AMAZING. I am a vet mission maker from OFP days and dabled in Arma2. The editor in DR is vastly superior and is, for my money, worth the 17.99 alone. It is probably the best mission editor I've ever seen shipped on a game disc.

Already, I've made a mission for co-op where you've got to defend a hill from a large enemy assault. You get support options (mortars/Jdams etc), weapons crates, and respawning. The enemy win if they trigger presence on the hill top. You can give the mission a full description (or not, lol) and even add a pic to it that shows up in game. It is far easier to use than the Arma2/original OFP one and deserves some attention if you want to really experience DR.

My only issue is the fact that in order to play the missions co-op online you need to manually send the mission files (usually under 1mb) to those you want to play with and they must manually put the file in their DR dir. Bit dodgy but could well get patched soon.

I also just want to stress something else here. The enemy A.I is very good in this game. They do things you simply don't see in Arma2. They are more aggressive and will not hesitate at closing the distance and coming right up on you. They flank really well (and the editor proves this isn't a scripted behaviour) and I've seen them throw smoke etc to use as cover.
