A really sad story all round if it turns out to be true.

The little girl will probaly suffer in years to come bcause of this, not physically, but mentally.

The problem is, with somebody like that, clearly something has gone very wrong with his wiring, for whatever reason. At the end of it all, we are just masses of complex wiring, which is what makes us who we are. In this tragic case, one human being is screwed up, resulting in another that is probably going to be.

While my instant reaction is also to want revenge for the little girl, my guess would be that (currently at least) she has no sentiments either way. I'm sure her mother probably does, but ultimately if any form of physical punishment was inflicted on the man the only thing that will have happened is that those around him will have lowered themselves a few notches morally, albeit with the right intentions.

Its a dilemma though, you could say the dilemma for modern society. We shouldnt kill people like him as we have decided that taking a life is morally wrong (and rightly so), most societies that work well dont follow the eye for an eye mentality, and on the whole are the better for it.

Torture or permanent disfugurment would be even worse morally than killing him so we are left with option C, lock him up so he is no longer a danger to society. Sadly this costs money and resources, but personally its the best option of a bad bunch imo.

It's very well used and I have no sensible way to clean it. I'm sure it'll die eventually and then I've got a new one to get dirty.

You could use some Cyber Clean putty stuff, for sale all over the place. I have some - it works.

Yeah. Absolutely. Whenever someone is accused of a crime and it looks like they probably did it, let's torture and mutilate them.

How about you do it. How about you're given a licence to do whatever you want by the government, and you can go about multiating and torturing anyone based on what you read in the papers. How about that for a justice system?

I'm with The Halk on this. Torturing people accused of crimes without even bothering with a trial is particularly vile.

Torture is infact far from inhuman. Actually it's very 'human'. That's why it's one of the first things so many people think of and want to do. It's in our nature to want to inflict pain and suffering unto those who we deem deserve it. Our human psyche means we have empathy towards creatures, whether it be our own race, humankind, or any other kind of mammal. And like any other kind of living organism, the majority of us want to look out for and protect those of our kind to preserve our species. Therefor when something/someone threatens our species/those we are predispositioned to care for/about we feel the need to eradicate that threat and go further to the point of exacting revenge for the sake of feeling we have dealt our own hand of justice and brought back a sense of equilibrium. Suffering inflicted upon us brings unbalance. Suffering returned to the threat brings balance back.
