Thanks for all the advice - will start doing some tentative poking around now I know what I'm looking for

An e39 might be seen as a bit of neighbourly oneupmanship, my neighbour has a rather tatty 523i

- Will definitely consider it though, its not a car I've had much exposure to.

I'm glad this hasnt turned into a "loldiesel" thread- I'm guessing that I was right in thinking there arent any petrols that would do the job? The only thing I can think about is the TSI VAG engines, but they just seem like a bad idea.

The BMW Sixes have combined MPG of 29.7-32mpg depending on model and engine size and will get 36ish on the Motorway if you do 70-80. This might be close enough for you?

If you are ever in Plymouth you can have a look around mine

Too small really - the Auris is a Golf sized car which is a class below the cars I'm looking at.

If it was Toyota it would be an Avensis and I just couldnt bring myself to do that. Likewise Honda Accord doesn't really do it for me

Why would he want a small Toyota hatchback?

Might be near enough, but I don't want to have to drive like there's an egg between my foot and the throttle just go get the economy. Not that I drive hard but driving for economy is tiring.

Might have to hold you to that offer at some point!

Anyways i like the 2.2 ICDTI Accord engine, not sure what the come in power widse in the latest shape you might have to wait a while till them come into price range.

I remember the over 300 cars thing, that wasnt BDwhatsit though was it?

The Accord would be a sensible choice but they just don't do it for me - I'm not even sure why. Without looking it up, they're probably roughly comparable to the 2.2TDCi Mondeo which is the one I'd rather have I think.

Again a bit small - I could get by with a Golf sized car but I'd rather something larger. The Octy VRS Diesel suggestion is probably the only one in that size class that I'd consider but it is available as an estate which makes it nearly comparable to the 330d touring in size terms.

I'm not fussed about prestige etc, but big diesels seem to be a bit of a niche confined to the prestige manufacturers.
