Burger King in Hospitals

There's been a burger king in Addenbrookes (Cambridge) for as long as I can remember, 10 years at least.

Edit: Bah, beaten to it. :(

I was really surprised to see it in there, shocked maybe. It's been there for a number of years.

There's a Costa coffee place in my local hospital; I think it's just the way it's all going. I don't particularly agree with it but as long as people are suckers and keep buying, they'll keep opening new shops.

It's not really for the patients though, it's for the family and friends that frequent the hospital

This, ours was almost entirely frequented by staff, visitors or outpatients. Regardless though, there are very few people who a junk food meal is going to have a negative effect on just because they're in hospital.

Personally I wouldn't touch Burger King with somebody else's barge pole.
There is one in Addenbrooke's in Cambridge.
I go there every other day for dialysis and the smell from the place...egh...

As for the comment on hospital food.
How many people here have actually experienced it within say the last year or so?
I've had the misfortune to spend a fair amount of time in hospital over the past couple of years and I was actually most impressed with the food.
We got a menu each day with 2-3 things to choose from (for our hot meal).
If there is nothing on there you like then there is a "standard" menu you can order from.
You can also order hot food whenever you like or get hungry.

The portions were good and some of the dishes (like their chicken curry and beef curry) were gorgeous.

Yes, I have.

First was for just over a week with an Appendecitus in NHS Watford General. The menu you are given to choose your lunch and dinner was well presented and the dishes are listed in a way that makes them sound very impressive. However, I had been expecting them to be freshly made, but was quite dissapointed when at meal time, someone rolls around to the ward a rack on wheels, containing four industrial grade microwaves, which they then use to nuke the food and give out. They were pretty terrible and by the end of the week I'd figured that the only dishes worth eating were the fish ones, as they didn't come out overcooked or rubbery.

I actually had to have said Appendix out a couple months later and was able to do that on my private medical insurance. Very different experience then, freshly cooked food for every meal, starters, main courses, desserts even ice-cream! It was lovely, although I could barely eat at first.

NHS was terrible though.

Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles had what I can only describe as a food court in there complete with starbucks etc etc.

And they gave me free treatment!

Well I guess you just get a better quality of food at the more famous hospitals.

I used to work at Leeds General Infirmary, and they used to have a Burger King in one of the cafeteria areas for staff and visitors. That cafeteria area has been closed, and is now new offices.

I wonder how much Burger King had to bribe them to pull this off. Maybe some sort of profit sharing arrangement?
Im sure Burger King gave them an offer they couldn't refuse.
It's just franchised catering. Most food courts in train stations, hospitals, some educational facilities and some shopping centres are run by compass group, one of the franchises they put in most frequently is BK.

The food at Kings College hospital in London is utterly shocking. How they expect anyone to get any kind of nourishment from it I don't know. My advice would be to get the halal meal or something from the special dietary requirements because, at least, it looks like someone has actually thought about what needs to go in it.

Southampton general wasn't much better, but the hospital is considerably cleaner than Kings. I can only assume that if the rest of the hospital is in such a disgusting state then the kitchen probably isn't much better. At least Burger King has some basic standards that they actually stick to because they are monitored by the authorities.
