The Official Motorola Milestone Thread

I don't know, I'm always on the look out for something that would make me move from my Hero but this doesn't seem to be it.

It has a cheap look to it, possibly as the pictures are not that great and the phone looks a little scuffed. Might change my opinion once they're over here and we can get some hands on with it.

The software it is running does seem to be impressive and the hardware will be able to deal with most things thrown at it however I'm not keen on the look yet :p

I actually really like the look of that phone. Will keep an eye on it.My first colour screen phone was a motorola.I really liked it but then they just didn't seem to progress with technology very well so I moved to SE phones.

There has never been a good motorola. And not just OS, their hardware was always average at best. Not a single of their phones ever excelled at anything, and was ever regarded as technology leading, or anything more than being featured in every possible tv series and movie spot in US. In fact I don't know how they even still exist. Their CPUs were crap, their phones were crap and their coms equipment was crap. They are fiat of the phone world. no one likes them, no one buys them and yet market is full of them.

Android changes all that though, it has a set requirement for hardware like how all 1.5 cupcake gen hardware are virtually same spec just soem have hw kb some don't but all are 320x240 screen size, similar cpu speeds, similar cameras, similar buttons etc.

Android 2.0 goes beyond that and unlocks the hw limitation. This Moto says it records DVD quality video, that alone tells you the camera is something good.

We already know the cpu is good because the iPhone is very fast using the same chip and the power vr gpu it uses follows the same story.

By all intents this Moto handset should be a cracking powerhouse of a phone because the components within it are established and known to perform well. It may not be as stylish visually as some would like but people said the same thing about the HTC Magic and Hero when press photos came out for those and now look, everyone loves their design and their "chins".

it looks quite nice - and it might have even swayed me from my desire to get a Nokia N900, but for two things:

1. The keyboard keys looks horrifically small
2. It's a Motorola.

The camera can't be any worse than the iPhone... and at least it has flash.

It could be - look at the Hero's camera. At any rate I wont get the iphone partly because of its poor camera.

edit - I guess the camera cant be all that bad if it records dvd quality footage.

You might have to wait a good deal longer for it to come out here though. There are quite a few android 2.0 phones coming out before Christmas, you should have a nice choice (and the N900)

worry not - i'm 100% definitely going to get an N900 :)

the Allure of Maemo 5 is far to strong.

Please don't try and use logic with people that can't grasp it. How anyone can say the hardware is crap, when as you saz all the components are in the other top phones, and BGR have said explicitally that build quality IS superb, I will never know.

The problem is, the legacy of past Motorola phones - their hardware has indeed been dire - its hard to trust them. Just like I wouldnt buy an LG and Id have to be hard pressed to buy an HTC due to their past poor hardware.

Almost perfect, shame it will never utilize Sense UI :(. I'll wait for HTC to release a 5MP+, DVD recording, 480 x 854 phone with snapdragon processor.

To be honest I think i'd rather have Android 2.0 than Sense UI. As awesome as it is, Sense UI is (afaik) currently only rolling out on Android 1.5, and I don't like the fact it can't be disabled, it's too tied into the OS.

Android 2 does look like a nice UI enhancement over Android 1.5, I'll have to see 2.0 in action. I like the look of the N900 as well :(.

Shame there's no videos of it in action yet... very frustrating. This release has been water tight... usually there are tons of youtube vids online by now.

EDIT - I have really, really gone off the N900 now. Reviews have not been overwhelmingly positive, and the resistive screen... I just couldn't have one again, no matter how "sensitive" it is. PLus very few apps out for Maemo, compared to Android it is nowhere near as big, and never will be.

"DVD quality video" is marketing speak for VGA @ 30fps. It's certainly no indicator of picture quality.

Looks like an interesting phone though. The more Google had to do with it and the less Motorola had to do with it, the better. :)

Sure I saw an advert on TV for this last night, only on Orange?

No that was the dext!

Slightly disingenuous - the vast majority of reviews have been positive. Maemo 5 is a 'new' OS, of course it doesnt have many apps to start with - it will - ported over from linux, maemo 4, plus new apps.
