Freemasonary....

Something dodgy about secret societies, if they're so good why not tell.

It kinda loses all meaning then if anyone can join?

1. More of a community feel by having a limited number.
2. Anonymous, to an extent, charity work. - Not needing personal recognition
3. That childhood feeling of being part of a secret club :p

I suspect that it's the people higher up in the organisation that are the main cause for concern for people. These higher degree masons can also be very wealthy and powerful, hence if they are a part of some secret club, it's only natural that people will be at least curious, if not suspicious.

Regardless of any conspiracy theory, I don't see any problem with members of the general public wanting to know what such powerful people are up to in these secret societies.

Why should they have any knowledge of what they're doing? It's not as if they're being funded by the governments?

Or are they?

DUN DUN DUN!

I personally dont see an issue with it. Unless something catastrophic happens and they cause fear for my life etc then let them be.

There are a lot worse societies out there that we should fear!

Freemasonry and the Orange Order go hand in hand in Western Scotland. To be a member of one is almost certainly a given that you are a member of the other. No place in modern society for either of them.

The orange order are soley Protestant men, Freemason's are any religion and not specifically defined.

Bizarre.

According to this you are right. But in the same page, a bit further down, it states that they swear on the Bible. If they aren't a Christian organisation, why would they swear on the Bible?

Makes no sense...

Well, all members must believe in a "Supreme Being". The form of which is interpreted differently by the members. Not all of them are Christians I would guess.

To take this further, any mason is strictly prohibited from questioning the stance of another freemason on any subject. Anyone found doing so will be outcast.

Discussion of Religion and Politics is prohibited for this particular reason. No mason should ever have to justify themselves to another mason. Period.

Ok I'll bite.
I've been a mason for the last 10 years, and have been master of my lodge.

To answer some questions:

It's basically a big social club, and we raise money for charity.
We're the biggest charity in the country after the lottery.
All the monies we raise are given by members either directly, or through social events, raffles etc.
You can be a member from any religion, I personally know jewish, christian, and sikh masons in just my lodges.
You don't need a bible, each religion can use his own book - just like courts do.
There's no great mystery in joining, you can even just email Grand Lodge and they can put you in touch with a local lodge.
It's not particulary secret either, we publish a yearbook with all the lodges and their officers in it, and the Grand Lodge website is here

http://www.ugle.org.uk/

If anyone has any sensible questions just ask.

No there are no goats or satanists.

Thanks for that.

1. How often are the meetings or whatever you call them?
2. What would go on in the average meeting?
3. How many members would each lodge have on average?
4. What is the process of joining?
