My Golf - Update thread

hehe, I love the DreXeL modding philosophy.

I'm not going to mod it.

Ok, maybe just tiny bit.

Ermm.....maybe a bit more.....

Engine swap..........

repeat!

OK, time for a bit of an update. Haven't done any mods since the strut brace and ARB, pretty much just been driving it and enjoying it, not to mention loving how cheap it is to run. It's been 100% reliable, and just flew through the MOT with only a couple of minor advisories.

The engine I bought has been sat at the back of the garage waiting for me to get off my arse and do something with it, so I tracked down a MK4 crossflow head:

And some R1 carbs:

The head needs some minor work before fitting to the 2.0 bottom end (an oil drain hole needs filling and moving slightly), at the same time I'll get it ported. I then have to make a manifold up to mate the carbs to the head.

Again, this isn't going to happen over night, it'll be as and when I can be arsed :D

Ok, another little update. I finally decided to get my arse in gear and start work on the 'new' engine. I stripped it as far as I needed to and removed the head. It was looking a bit sorry for itself so I gave it a de-greasing and a couple of coats of engine enamel:

The pistons and bores are in great shape, very little coking on the pistons and the honing marks are still very visible in the bores.

Next thing is getting the minor work done to the new head before fitting it, then I'll fabricate an inlet fanimold in work and fit the carbs. Also need to decide on a camshaft.

Another update for anybody who's interested. Pics aren't the best quality I'm afraid, taken on my phone.

I made the small mods needed to the head and fitted it:

I fabricated a quick 'n' dirty inlet manifold, it's not the prettiest thing but it'll work for now:

I then loosely fitted the manifold and attached the carbs to check fitment:

The runners are ~90mm long, could doing with being longer for better torque but that length is ideal for space and 'packaging' under the bonnet, and it's only a fraction shorter than the length of the runners on a Bogg Bros manifold, and they know a thing or two about fitting bike carbs to a car engine.

I'll be ordering a Newman 272 deg Camshaft tomorrow, after that's installed it'll be pretty much ready to swap into the car :)

cool build, what head did you say you use ? a mk4 golf one ? (2.0l i presume?)

And what / how did you go about the mods that needed to make it fit ?

nice build, looking forward to seeing it in the engine bay :p

Yeah I used a MK4 crossflow head. I had to blank/reposition an oil drain hole, and open out two of the head-bolt holes. Other than that it's a straight fit onto the 2E bottom end :)

Love it :)

Your mention of how good the ARB upgrade has sealed it for me, have just ordered one for the Fiesta (which doesn't have a rear one as standard, so should be a pretty significant change!)
