Everything thats wrong at the moment

1. No free bus travel for kids - Right, this is just silly, this was introduced because kids are becoming lazy and so someone came up with the 'bright' idea that making buses free would encourage them to go out and exercise. STUPID! when it was introduced many kids got a bus 2-3 stops which usually they would walk, and just generally abused buses because it was free, no loss to them if they get kicked off.
Solution: Make kids pay 40p and adults 80p per ride, no extra charge if person doesn't have oyster, but people should be encouraged to get one with adverts around the bus

I didn't even know some were free. Not really bothered by this, as I've never taken the bus.

2. Immigrants commiting serious crime within 4yrs of coming to country they should be deported - This is NOT a racist comment, I have no problems with immigrants coming over, I do however have a problem when they rape, steal, rob etc. Its silly, they clearly have not come here with a view for a better life and living happily amongst others. Then what happens, they get put in prison - costing the government money AND filling up the prisons. People complain that criminals are getting let out of prison early - why do they think this happens.... its because they are full - the new criminals must go to prison pushing the older ones out with an unfinished sentence.
Solution: If an immigrant commits serious crime within 4yrs of coming to country they should be deported - this kills 2 birds with 1 stone for reasons explained above.

Sure.

7. Unemployment benefits given out for 1yr at the most
I don't know much about this so I could be rambling on about something already done, but 1yr is enough time to find a job, so after 1yr, no more unemployment benefits.
Solution: Unemployment benefits given out for 1yr at the most

Hmm, I don't know. I'd be inclined to agree, but then in the rare case of people who cannot get a job, they'd be screwed. I suppose it probably would do more good than bad though. I don't see why some people on benefits should get more than some who work. They shouldn't have any spare money imo. Food stamps, and a small bit of money for clothing and children would do.

8. Free NHS needs to have some sort of limit
I have not thought this one through very well, I was thinking something along the lines of after 1yr of having a job it would cost moneys for NHS but this doesn't work out very well for mothers taking 10yrs off work to look after kids etc.
Solution: Your help needed!

I think adding a limit takes away from the whole idea of it. Sure, as it is now, if nothing goes wrong with you, you are essentially paying for another person's healthcare, however if you do require treatment, it's there for you. If you put a limit on it, whether that's timed or monetarily limited, you cut off people who cannot work due to an illness. If someone can't get a job because they're disabled, how can they be expected to pay for their healthcare?

11. Take off smoking warning stickers
I am not a smoker, never have been, but I don't see why people who do choose to smoke should have to put up with massive stickers saying they will die. The government must remember the money they are getting from this.
Solution: Take off smoking warning stickers but people still shouldn't be allowed to smoke in public buildings.

I can't see any possible reason to take them off. There's no economical benefit and they aren't an inconvenience.

12. More war monuments
Our guys out there are fighting for our country, (many of which probably didn't want to go to war against Iraq), are treated like **** when they get home, they are friking heroes guys! I saw some thing where kids were mocking this guy who had his arm blown off(was posted on here a while ago), that is just disgusting as far as I'm concerned.
Solution: Treat war heroes with respect, look after them etc.

Yes, we should respect the soldiers, but I don't think glorifying war itself and building monuments is the best idea.

13. Proper cycle lanes
This is tricky, I know, but I would be much more inclined to ride to work if I didn't have to ride on the road, cycle lanes on paths would be ideal.
Solution: New Roads being made should have 'proper' cycle lanes

Agreed. Allows cars to go faster, and makes bicycles slightly safer.

14. Stop putting pressure on students to go uni!
I have recently gone through sixth form and I found myself in overwhelming pressure to go to uni. This is wrong to me, I should not be under this pressure, I have been told that I will for sure get a higher paid job if I have a degree. I was on the brink of going to uni but a nice little ICT job popped up which I took, and I'm hoping to prove these people wrong
Solution: Apply pressure on students to get a job OR go to uni and not just hang around on streets

Doesn't really bother me. I WANT to go to uni, so, meh.

15. Kids should stay at school until 16
This has been raised to 18, honestly, what were they thinking, in those 2yrs people who didn't want to do A-Levels are going to make it hell for those who did, it is an utterly ridiculous idea which needs to be taken away and forgotten immediately.
Solution: Put things back how they were, kids can leave school at 16

While I think it will be better for education as a whole for kids to stay on until 18, I am glad that I just missed out on the change, and I'll be able to go through sixth form without a load of ******** in my class.

16. Bring back SATS
These were taken away because kids were being put under pressure to revise and it was thought to be too young. They are indeed correct it is to young - So why on earth are they putting pressure onto these kids to revise - I'm guessing its to meet some targets someone has set - Common sense failure as far as I'm concerned. SATS are a great way to access how clever the kid and they are important.
Solution: Bring back SATS

I didn't even know they'd been stopped. I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I wasn't under any pressure at all when doing them, we didn't revise or have homework, they were easy, and I think they did a good job of seperating the secondary school classes.

17. Euthanasia legal
I saw an awful thing on the news a couple of days ago, a man out of pure love and care for his wife killed her to prevent her from suffering from an illness, but he then had to kill himself. This is wrong, with a careful euthanasia law i.e. a law that cant be abused by people, this kind of thing can end.
Solution: Make euthanasia legal (carefully)

I'd like to agree, but it's very hard to ensure it isn't being abused. How do you know the person being euthanised hasn't agreed to it just because they were threatened?

18. Stop cutting random trees down!
This could be me, but 3months ago the council came and cut down the nice trees down our road, healthy and ill ones, whats the point? anyone else had this? Irritating because its ruined the look of my road, and also because I like to think that the tree was countering the pollution my car was causing, weird I know, but there is some truth in that.
Solution: Think before cutting down random trees!

I've noticed this too. An entire wood has been cut down near my nan's, and the trees have just been left to rot. Nothing is been built on it, it now just looks ugly and barren, and serves no useful purpose.

Kids don't have to stay in academic education until they're eighteen... they have to stay in education or training. People can just do an apprenticeship... isn't it good that people are staying in education or training until they're eighteen? :s

If that's the case then that's great. However, if everyone stays in education until they are 18 then who is going to stack the shelves in Sainsbury's?

meh, most of them are true i suppose. But lets face it, these problems will remain problems for a long time to come, as the people in charge are dense.

Edit: To the above, I'm in sixth form and i have found that the change from lower school to sixth form has filtered out a lot of the chav scum, and left a nice bunch of people who want to get far in life. I think it would be a bad move to force people to stay on education longer for this reason.

Me and the other unemployed folk who are 18+ ? There's not exactly a surplus of jobs here...they'll lament the loss of the cheap labour I'll bet, £3.60 and ~£5 is a big difference.

Sorry, I was being facetious. I was trying to imply that there are people who don't want to be at school until they are 18 and there are jobs / careers that don't require vocational training.

How are most of these right wing views, everyone shouting "daily mail" blah blah. No wonder the country is so messed up :p

What possible reason is there to disagree with 2?

Call me mental... but equipping future generations with more skills than are necessary to do the most menial of tasks seems like a good idea, to me. They might still work in pretty bad jobs... be do they have to be utter retards?

What purpose does it serve?

Yes, if you can see the value in doing the training, you want to make use of it in your future career and it's something you enjoy then brilliant, I wish you all the best hope that you become extremely successful.

If, however, you don't want to do it and it's not going to be useful for what you want to do then I also hope you become a success, but I don't see any point in you doing any training and I prefer a smaller class size or the apprentice place you would have taken goes to someone who really wants it, or to someone who isn't in school but want the training because they are currently unemployed.

Because raising the general levels of education in society is a good thing? IMO a large part of the reason ***** kids are ***** kids is because the parents don't have two braincells they can rub together. Why do we accept we should train people to have the bare minimum to do the most menial of tasks? Why don't we aim for a bit more than producing a stream of retards ready to serve us at Tesco?

Oh, I understand the rational behind it and it should be applauded, I just don't think that beyond the basic skills of Maths, English and so on you should try to educate someone against their will.

There are, but they appear to be saturated with applicants. Otherwise cleaning certificates wouldn't exist...mind you, a lot of it seems to be pointless box ticking. Why not just train on the job, as used to be the case? It seems businesses want something for nothing. I know the tax regime isn't great but I'd have supported a cut in rates over giving billions to the banking system.

What happened to you moving in with the missus mate? :(

Don't have one now.

4. Motorway speed limit should be increased to 80mph and 70mph in wet

.

!

I think a tolled motorway for high speed (80?) is a fine idea, of course it's only fine if the toll fee is reasonable enough to not be expensive over the course of a week but just right enough so the type of people who can't stand to spend a small amount for the luxury of the legal cruising speed of say 80MPH don't use it and thus those types of people causing accidents not on these toll roads.

Of course that will never happen :p

Because it used to be the case that people left school numerate and literate (iirc)... that's not the case anymore (iirc).

Doesn't reflect my experience. I haven't worked in a shop before and that seems to be far more of a sticking point than my 9 GCSEs at A-C, or lack of...

Are you people in the northern half of the country living in some isolated bubble? Does the 20% (ONS) unemployment rate reflect badly educated locals? If what you're saying is true I could move up north and get a job tomorrow. I'm skeptical because you haven't backed up your statement.

I honestly don't know what you're asking me .

But I am living in an isolated bubble... an isolated bubble called university :D.

You're saying there are literacy problems serious enough to make on-the-job training pointless in a reply to me in post #76, please back up this assertion?

A good portion of the homeless folk I met were ex-servicemen. Although there are a few dedicated charities for that cause, ineffective as they may be. But nothing for the neglected group that just needs some short-term (3-6 months) assistance to get back on their feet. I guess being in a (relative) minority doesn't do them any favours.

Yh ok, war monuments are not the way to go, but something needs to be done about them, because as far as i'm concerned they are a priority.

IMMIGRANTS, MUSLIMS AND DARKIES, OH MY !

It's fair to say that all of the UK's problems can be traced back to - if not directly linked to - all of the above.

Also, Polish workers who are, you now, prepared to work.

Yeah.
