Explain?

Mondeo's and Focii are awful cars. Build quality is generally substandard. Sorry if this upsets you but thats my take on things. A chiquechonk is too small and even worse in the build quality stakes.

Could you expand on that? I don't follow your line of thinking...

I agree with you, sadly here it will fall on deaf ears, you would think Ford were the greatest cars ever after reading this forum.

Golf sounds like a good deal and will make a good run around, just take someone else with you if you go to look at it and give it a full check over.

Thread contains high levels of car ignorance.
Pull your head out of your backside Janesy. The guy wants a Golf. It's not like he's looking at Astras. You can't flat out say that the focus is better than the golf in every way. It may not live up to the 'nearly BMW standard' reputation that the mass market seem to have given it, but that's all that's wrong with it really. Do you really not think that a 2000/2001 plate Golf SE is worth £1500-£2000?

Would you like to highlight some of his ignorance?

A Ford will fall to pieces, yes I forgot, the last time I drove my car both doors fell off.

Insurance - look at his age, the difference between this and say a 330i would probably be about a tenner.

this is just for a run around so i dont want a high performance money pit..
- No one even suggested a fast car, just highlighted that he doesn't need to buy a 1.6 Golf for insurance reasons.

Could you expand on that? I don't follow your line of thinking...

Doesn't understand the Ford servicing and Parts are genuinely much cheaper than VAG and in this case the 1.6 Variant won't even be all that reliable due to issues highlighted in other threads.

A MkIV Golf is massively better built than a MkI Focus, despite the fact that they both started production in 1998.

By comparison the Focus feels thin and tinny. The Golf oozes far more quality and generally feels like a more refined place to be.

I'm not saying that translates into reliability but I know which I'd rather drive day in day out. All cars break down to some degree, you just have to go with the one you prefer.

OP - that sounds like a good deal assuming all is well mechanically.

Have you got a link to the advert?

A quick ebay search would suggest the mileage should be at least double for that asking price. Wouldn't suprise me if theres something amiss there.

As a mere suggestion, you could look at a Seat Leon - pretty much the same car and less badge tax than a VW Golf.

Doesn't one of the Golf models from that era have a gearbox that disintegrates?

My view on the Golf is that I wouldn't pay extra for it over the Focus (which is what most people have been doing on the second hand market the last 5-10 years) but at the same price point it is down to personal preference when choosing between them.

When I was considering them I was looking at the Toledo, Bora and the Leon rather than the Golf.

Seems a lot to me.. at the end of the day, it's a 10-year-old not-very-fast hatchback, do you really want to spend nearly £2k on it?

Yep, it's a Golf all-right. Quite a cheap one actually.

They do hold their value well once you have bought one. But you could just buy a much bigger faster car for the money.

Seems a decent deal to me....very reasonably priced provided its kosher. If you don't like/want a Ford then more power to you...Focii handle much much better than the Golf you are looking at but, as has been said, they aren't brilliant in other areas so it depends what qualities you are looking for in a car really.

Tesco Compare says it's more like £140 or 50% more. Running costs of a 330i are considerably more in servicing, fuel, tyres etc. All of that is negated by the fact that if the OP came and started a spec me a 2k 3 series, Fox would say "Run, don't walk, away."

He may have strange and/or misguided views about fords, but no more so than this forums strange and misguided view about VWs. He's not likening it to a bmw, he's saying its a more preium quality car than a Ford, which somehow you're denying? And you still think that £1750 for the car the OP posted about is too much?

Golfs are tidy and feel solid so if thats what you want its probably your best shot at getting it for about 2 grand. The only problem is that like most German manufacturers VW specialise in PERCEIVED quality not actual quality so you need to be ready to spend money on it every so often fixing more broken stuff.

I don't think there is much wrong with the price, it's a sub £2k car so 'book price' hardly means much does it?

Yes, but I didn't suggest one, I was marely pointing out insurance isn't a big issue. If you did a bit more shopping around, the overall difference wouldn't be that much. The car is suspiciously cheap, normally they do not deserve the premium they command, but if this one turns out to be straight and 100% legit, then it's a good deal.

OP - that sounds like a good deal assuming all is well mechanically.

2 BMW master techs have had a look at it and they say it is all good. If they had to pick an issue then it could do with a new front tyre and maybe wiper blades..

It hasn't been advertised. I have seen the service book and a massive wad of receipts which confirm its mileage and history. It's all good

It's definitely kosher.

Throwing a bit of a curveball here..
Have you thought about get a Skoda Fabia. I would assume they would make good run arounds (polo engines afaik).

Well,

Generally repair and parts costs are lower for a Focus than a Golf, for example.

They are consistently high in reliabilty stakes, you only need to speak to someone who's owned a Focus to know that (of course there are a few lemons about like any car)

They give you more for your money because there are ignorant people about who think "eewww ford". So you'll get something newer, higher spec and lower mileage.

Generally a better car because of the above, plus they are much better to drive.

Follow it now?

Clearly you're one of the aforementioned ignorant "ewww ford" people - thats fine, but dont try to disguise it as "knowledge" that they are poor cars

Thats a bit of a strange comment since 90% of the cars i have had in my life have been fords..
