Do you have to rethink due to our silly motoring costs??

Norway? It is not a patch on Denmark!

Denmark has the highest car prices in the world, thanks to a registration tax that goes in to the realms of 180%, on top of a massive VAT rate.

An M3 Cabriolet in Denmark costs £200,000.
Is that just for imported cars or all cars?

yeh, it's roughly the same price in Norway

VAT is 25% in both Norway and Denmark, but an M3 cab is ~1.6m DKK and NOK, so depending on the exchange rate it makes the Danish price slightly higher (by £15,000). but yes, it is rather obscene.
i can't comment on the danish price, but on the Norwegian one, £100,000 out of £180,000 is tax. lovely.

if i wanted to stick my 8 year old diesel hatchback on Norwegian plates it would cost me £10,000.

all cars are imported in Denmark (and Norway) :p

How many cars in Denmark are NOT imports?!
Well, some of our Toyotas, Nissans, Hondas and Fords aren't imported.

Do they have any plants setup there?
Numerous countries in asia have plants setup by toyota, Honda etc and their cars are "normally" priced and the imported models have 2-3x import duty.

I'm having a rethink but not due to cost. I'm slowly accepting that I do so few miles that it's not worth me having a decent car. My dilemma is that I like cars, it's one of my hobbies however it's sadly one of those hobbies that I don't often get time to enjoy.

If I was totally sensible I'd just get a £2k runabout but I can't bring myself to be that sensible quite yet so I'm thinking of a compromise and maybe getting another TT.

can you get a Mk2 for your budget?
is there really any point though, so what if you barely do any miles? even more reason to have something really good..

All the more reason to have something amazing. Because who cares if it does 15mpg if you do 10 miles a week?

Get a supercharged MX5.
Wont cost money to run, is fun and cheap.

I dont really think we can compare like with like with their bread and butter cars though, hence i picked something I know the market for which is like for like.

Yes we can, we can compare the Civic, Corolla, Fit/Jazz, Focus

Exactly, i can only dream of the days i dont clock up 1000 miles a week and can have a dream car not worrying about running costs.

Jez - i wouldnt have thought im that unusual in being a director who commutes to work and doesnt have a company car, the tax implications etc make it too expensive in a small business.

Yes but my tax bill is already big enough, and the cost to the company is prohibatively high - i cant claim mileage for the commute either its very much not allowed under tax rules and my accounts are audited.

Fuel - expensed

I've just lost my private fuel benefit as the company goes into cost cutting mode. This is a fairly major blow for me as I live out in the sticks and for anything other than day to day food or supplies it's a trip to Cardiff or Newport which is about a tenner in petrol, it's pushed the cost of living up rather a lot and thus is effectively a fairly massive pay cut.

New lambda sensor ordered to replace the 16yr old one (didn't care about running rich while I was collecting V-Power points and not paying for fuel) and interview for a new job on Tuesday. Yup the cost of motoring is forcing me to change jobs.

Spot of irony in this post.

One has to wonder whether he might still have his private fuel allowance still if didn't massively take the mick out of his employer by running a 16 year old 3 litre V6 with a faulty MAF sensor on his fuel card...

To be fair, I only ran that car for a month, then the windscreen happened, leaving me in the Volvo 940 for 6 months, and they took away the private fuel allowance before I got the Cefiro back on the road. This is the other part of why I haven't gotten around to sorting the lambda sensor yet (don't even know if it's actually faulty or not, and it wasn't top priority due to lack of funds and not costing me money).

It's only a 2 litre anyway.

The best part is my private mileage is about 2% of my ridiculous business mileage and there's no-one else in the company who can support the software they sell and support. The private fuel and ability to run a car of my choosing that wasn't horrid was the only reason I ever stayed there despite the crap base pay.

I never had private fuel, but surely your business mileage more than pays for it? (as mine does, even in a 4.3 V8 auto).
