TV License question

dumbing down the population

Nowhere near as much as other channels, some of the dross on ITV and SKY fits that bill far more. You also get programmes that probably wouldn't be made by any other TV company in the the world (except maybe PBS in the states), things like some of the output of BBC 4 (excellent programme on prime numbers), horizon the other week (how long is a piece of string, delved into some interesting topics like quantum supposition and fractal geometry).

I'm in the same category as Magick, in that I've never paid the TV Licence in all my years and have never had a single problem not doing so either.
I never paid for nearly over 20 years had many visits in that time but on the last it nearly come too blows so i give in in the end but i had a good run for my money :)

Theft. Nice.

And yet we wonder why society is *******.

I don't want to pay my income tax because I think it's unjustified and I don't support the government.

What do we think ocuk? Should I withhold it so I can make a stand for my rights engraved in Magna Carta?

Theft. Nice.

Not theft as there's no loss of physical property.

The TV license paradigm is akin to a band coming round your house without asking if you want them too, then threatening you with legal action when you refuse to pay for the unwanted performance.

There are many reasons why the UK is in pretty bad state but it's not because people refuse to pay for a TV License.

I've had letters from TV licensing in the past.. i went for a period of about 2 years without watching TV.. i owned a TV, but only used it for watching DVD's, movies off my PC, and my xbox / xbox 360.

Legally I was allowed to do this. i recieved final notice after final notice saying they were sending inspectors and if i was breaking the law i would be prosecuted... the key word in that is 'if', they don't know.

It's up to them to prove that you are guilty, not you to prove that you are innocent.

They never sent an inspector, by the way.

I now have virgin media, and pay for my license as i should.

Don't have a TV licence as I don't watch tv. There is nothing on tv worth watching, so I use the TV for my Xbox/Wii/Media PC. Got a letter through about not having a licence, I rang them up and informed them, they were cool about it and said they may send someone round to check this out.

This was about 4 months ago and not heard anything else.

I got a TV Licensing letter through yesterday... dated January 2009 :/.

May have missed it in this thread already, but do you need a TV License to watch iPlayer?

Do not pay.
Ignore their letters.
If they send a man round do not let him in, do not answers questions, just shut the door.
Do not have your TV in a place viewable or audible from the front door or windows.

Buy yourself something nice with the money you have just saved :)

I never once paid mine. They would send letters every couple of weeks and eventually sent a man round. I told him "no english" in a polish accent and shut the door. Never got bothered after that.

They only way they can take you to court is if their investigator sees or hears a TV programme that is scheduled to be on at that time (i.e. you let him inside your house).

DO NOT LET THEM INTIMIDATE YOU.
