ATi Catalyst 9.12's Next Wednesday.

Well from what i have played it has ran ok mate. Ati need to sort their drivers out asap. If not i may have to think about trying out nvidia. Bad drivers mate. Its such a shame because if ati fixed the way reported to them and were on top of the drivers my 4870 x2 would be a lot better than it is now. Turning cat a.i off just causes mouse lag in games like cod for me.

have you not thought it could be driver conflicts rather than the ATI drivers themselves?

I recently installed something (couldn't narrow it down) which meant my computer booted and shut down slowly. i believe it was a benchmark of sorts so a fresh instal has solved it and it's back running sweet with just my basic programmes needed.

Maybe it's worth a try doing a fresh instal and then going through each game at a time to rule out the ATI drivers. Long winded yes but it'll save having to spend more money on an Nvidia card etc

I have ordered a temporary card which is only for the next few months so I haven't spent much but it will bridge the gap until when either fermi is out or the 5890 / 5990 is available. I'll even consider the 5970, possibly..if it drops in price.
I have enjoyed the X2 but after a long while of playing various games I have found the performance either impressive or not quite adequate and its only recently that it's started to annoy me a little. I think it is most likely a crossfire issue re games not supporting it as frequently as with single gpu cards. Maybe there is more compatibility issues to be solved than I first anticipated. The next top end card I buy may be a single gpu card. We'll see. :)

nobody says these are going to be performance drivers! so dont get too excited or dissapointed if there released with no real performance differences! =p

They so did say they were performance drivers, there's meant to be improvements for need for speed shift and since dirt 2 just released I'm sure improvements for that too

But still people get too hyped over them, I want every bit of performance but it usually boils down to 1-2 fps

well yes, there are optimisations in these games, yes. its been benchmarked already, we know what to expect. but people seem to be thinking that these are going to be performance drivers and magically unlock the performance of the 5*** series graphics cards. there was 1 website that said this about 2 months ago. and people read it from this single source and seem to have taken on board that this will be a special performance driver. but if this is a fancie performance driver, then you can all call me wrong, and ill be extreamly happy :P

well id be crazy not to believe you with ur 15000 odd posts! haha. you got a link man? i cant seem to find this apart from the one website that translated it from german 2 months ago. haha

I can't remember where it was now, but i think it was when the 9.10's came out, somewhere was on about their performance for the 5 series, and ATi said the improvements would be coming in the 9.12's when asked about it.

The reason why you could argue for 5770 is nicely summed up in tech reports review

Yes, the 5770 may not quite be as fast as the 4870 in current games, but those performance differences are rather minor, a few frames per second here or there at the most common resolutions. And some games run exceptionally well on any of these cards, regardless of resolution.

What's much harder to quantify is the true difference between DirectX 10-class hardware and DirectX 11-class hardware. A great many things are encompassed under that one umbrella, DX11. For instance, Juniper has a hardware tessellation capability that games may exploit to produce much higher quality polygon meshes at fluid frame rates. Although prior-generation Radeons also had hardware tessellation, DX10 doesn't make use of it. And current GeForces have no tessellation hardware at all. At some point down the road, games will begin to use DX11 tessellation, and one of two things will happen: either the game will simply look better on the DX11-class parts, or it will run much faster on the DX11 hardware. We'll likely see similar tradeoffs with other DX11 features, including HDR texture compression and multi-threaded command processing.

Juniper offers value on other fronts, as well, including higher quality texture filtering and supersampled antialiasing, not to mention the Eyefinity feature that enables gaming across three monitors at once. Toss in much lower power draw, cooler GPU temperatures, shorter board lengths, and lighter power supply requirements, too, as 5700-series advantages over similarly priced competitors. Soon, the value meter begins to wobble in the direction of the new Radeons.

Fair enough, but I was a bit disappointed after the huge jump from the HD3000 series to the HD4800 series, I mean there was easily a 100% increase there (e.g. HD3870 to HD4870).

And it will happen again when the next x870 cards come and are pushing the same frame rates as the 5970 remember the 3870x2..

hence im being smart and waiting :) ;)

simpley 5970 = 3870x2
5870 = 3870

wait till crysis 2

p.s i hate laptops in bed

Fear2 runs awesome here on 5970, probably the most smoothest fairly recent FPS i have played so far, maxxed out with 8AA,everything on, I dont think it ever dips below 100 :)

Hold on a second.

The 5870 is much better than the 3870. How can you say they are equal ?
