Nokia N900

Few other hints: To lock the screen, double click the power butto.

The message preview app is essential.

Make your favourite webpages a book mark on your desktop.

Mine has arrived and been SIM active for about a day now. I absolutely love it!

The keyboard and screen are a little hard to get used to straight away but now I have they both seem very smooth and easy to use. Only had one problem when the phone seemed to get stuck in the text message screen and wouldn't come out, even though it was responding to touches etc. I think I must have locked it into the screen somehow but not really sure how!

Battery has lasted 2 days now with moderate useage and I always turn WLAN and the screen off etc when left alone. Probably spent at least 90 minutes entering my contacts on the phone etc was strangely fun :)

Would definately recommend thus far!

I have to say I'm loving the FM transmitter, really handy for in the car, less wires to carry about.

Only thing I'm really wanting released is a turn-by-turn Sat Nav app. Other than that, all the app I needed are available, along with some nifty other wee apps that I didnt think I needed, like OpenSSH. Being able to dump stuff onto the device from any other PC via WiFi is awfully handy.

There's a fair few nice apps popping up in the Extras-Devel repository every day, they should filter down to Extras-Testing or just plain Extras soon. N900Fly is amusing, chuck your N900 in the air and it'll tell you how high it went, try and beat your previous record... ;)

What the cheapest people are finding contract prices at. I've done a quick google search most places still aren't offering the N900.

cheastest i've found is £34.26 (600m, unlimited text, unlimited web) with vodaphone through the nokia website, handset free.

Got to have unlimited web too.

only thing that puts me off slightly is the 24 month contract, i've got a 5800 at the minute but bored of that now, my last phone only last 3 months before i got rid.

however i've found a 12 month contract on another site again through vodafone, at £40 (same mins/txt/web) a month, but phone is about £90. works out quite a bit cheaper if you then assume an additional 12 months on sim only contract at £20.

Would the phone be unlocked with it being through nokia or would it be a vodafone handset still?

Ok, had the phone over a week now so feel bit better placed to comment on some things.

Battery life. Hmm, not really that good, though i do use it an awful lot for surfing and also receive a lot of calls on it. Tends to last me the day, more if I am actually doing some hard graft instead of surfing the net - had 2 days with light use which was pleasing. The charger convertion dongle was a stroke of genius I must say, I like that a great deal.

I like the fact there is a lot of cool stuff for the phone, I dislike the fact I am a spaz and know nowt about how to install stuff on it other than through the standard installer - any hints and tips are welcome linux geeks. Also, any suggestions for good software are happily accepted.

MMS. I have had twice in a week where MMS would have been nice, though I uploaded the pic to photobucket and texted the link so not the end of the world. If there is a fix, that will be good.

The keys are good for posting to forums but it is obviously a slow task compared to a proper keyboard - even my Flybook feels good to type on at the moment which is saying something!!! That said, they are accurate, responsiveand have become easier to use as time has passed, and learning things like shift and function locks has proved helpful.

Software on mine is excellent - one 'hang' in 9 days, where it got stuck in a text message, not done it again so just a blip I suspect. It took the memory card from my E71 without hassle, useful for transferring my photos over to the phone (tho they are upside-down on the N900...???) The screens are nice and slick, looks good and feels good to use. I was taken aback by the lack of manual - good reading for the bog I find - but I haven't really needed a manual, it is very intuative.

Email. This has been a problem, I can't seem to get my yahoo mail to talk to the phone, or rather the phone to talk to the yahoo server, something I am mildly annoyed about, though do admit I haven't tried more than once. Suggestions here are also welcome. Other than that, messaging is lovely and slick, I have an app that previews texts and it is one-button press to get the new message, with the status light telling you when a new message is waiting.

Screen is a filth magnet, as you would expect, but seems reasonably sturdy so far. A bug-bear I had with the E71 was the motor was too polite on vibrate so I missed a lot of calls and texts as I always have the ringer off. The N900 is great, not so loud that everyone knows you have a text but forceful enough to feel it. Good job Nokia.

Web browsing is very good, so good I have contemplated ditching my Flybook altogether, though flash isn't quite there yet, for example, iplayer won't work properly yet and facebook can be a little slow from time to time. That said, it transcends any phone I have ever used to access the web and the fact I could even think of selling the flybook is a compliment to the N900. If I had a full office suite (excel and word anyway...) and it was slightly better on some websites, I possibly would.

Cool stuff (to me anyway) I have found: Unlocking it by clicking the top button and swiping the screen - I like that a lot. Having my favourite contacts on desktop 4 - much easier to call/text. The tuner app, great as I have a lot of gigs this time of year. Having your favourite websites saved to desktop AND seeing a sort of preview.

So, once again, still love the N900. I have had chance to play with a couple of high-end Android handsets (HTC's) and they are not yet in the same league. My mate Si has one and everything the HTC does, the Nokia can do and generally better. The killer is just how slick the phone is and the fact that nobody has heard of the damn thing. This is STILL perplexing me, it is so much better than the N97 and imho it's as good as or better than it's smartphone rivals yet Nokia will not promote it. I appreciate different devices may do different things better, but as an overall performer, the N900 is damn hard to beat.

It seemed a little bit rubbish with touch screen (on 810), super mario wars seems good fun, but donno if its been ported to n900 yet.

Anyone used it in aeroplane mode (ie without the phone chip running) who can show some light on the batter life?
