How hot: Phenom 965BE

I re-sat the HSF last night, in a determined effort to make sure everythig was as it should be. Managed to get it down to 34/35 idle and 52/53 under prime95. I'm happer with that.

Just spoken to one of the tech chaps who tells me that 90c is acceptable for that CPU. I don't doubt him, but that seems 30 degrees over AMDs maximum temprature.

Ordered some Arctic Silver 5 today, so will give that a bash tomorrow. But for the moment I'm far more comfortable with the new figures.

much better temps :)

I would doubt the guy who says an AMD chip is fine at 90c, I think that might even be a bit hot for some intel chips :|

Well it was OC tech support, so I can only assume he knows his business. But as I say, seems way to high, and can't be good for the longevity of the CPU.

It's certainly way to hot for that CPU you start to get instability at around 65c

Yeah, I did politely question that fact with him but he seemed confident. 65 seems to me to be the limit under full load. Not ideal I imagine, and hopefully I can reach 3.8 without touching 60 which is fine for me. Now that I know it's not the CPU or Fenrir, I will look at the Corsair H50-1 in the next few months once everything has settled.

Thanks for all the help here all, have a Merry Christmas :)

Phenom II 965 is one of the hottest (most power consuming) "x86" PC CPUs ever so high temps should be expected. (unless temperature sensors are "tweaked")

Actually Prime isn't even that heavy load:

Errm, not true! I've never heard of one going over 55C before. Mine is on the max safe overclock of 3.8ghz @ 1.5v. (Can't get it any higher), and the highest I've seen with a Fenrir Titan with the fan on about 40% is 50C.

I can believe the temps. Not tried ocing yet as I wanted to get it stable. Under prime95 it was 51/53 which isn't far off yours, but then you don't state wether your highest was under a stress test or just general usage.

I've also yet to get these temps with the case side closed, so may just opt for a different case regardless.

i hav the same board, with the same gpu, cant say my board gets that hot, it max s out at 44*c O/C at 3.5ghz,the cpu cooler is supposed 2 be 1 of the best u can get, my ocz cooler is at best average, could b a case issue, i got the antec 300 and it knocked 10*c of my temps, for 40quid might be worth a go!!

Yeah I am going to RMA the Sileo for a HAF 922.

Yeh Prime95 for 2 hours reached 50C, at 3.8ghz @ 1.5v.

Probably my case, I didn't really think about it but I have an Antec 300 with decent air flow and only a little pansy graphics card, so the CPU cooler is drawing in pretty cold air and the flow is unrestricted pretty much, which I think is why my temps are pretty low.
