James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

Agreed... Great visuals can help, but the story/script is key. Take The Matrix for example...

I suspect story might be a little too simplistic for my liking, but I'll watch and see :)

Direction is also key. Look at the difference between The Matrix and Matrix Reloaded. The story to Reloaded wasn't necessarily a problem, it was the mess they made of everything else that was.

The kiss scene in Reloaded wasn't good but that was probably no worse than Trinity reviving Neo from the dead at the end of the first film by saying she loved him.

Amazing film. Can't wait to see it again! :D

Edit: The FX just add to the immersion and the film wouldnt work without it imo. Its just pure awesomeness.

Just seen it it.

First half, if a touch contrived, is still wonderful if only due the journey it takes you on - An immersive alien world with some great imagination. Nighttime Pandora is stunning!

The second half degenerates into some predictable goody natives vs baddy soldier stuff, with a small hint of cheesy mysticism - But still very entertaining.

Overall - Needed a more solid/interesting script. Needed a more solid/interesting lead. But a thoroughly enjoyable flick, and some truly breathtaking/imaginative visuals - And this is not really due to 3D, but just the quality and art of the CGI and the alien world/creatures.

Looking forward to a second visit to this world, but maybe with stronger/deeper script.

8ish/10

ps: looking forward to seeing the 2D version, as I felt the 3D version with the glasses on was a little blurred for me... I sort of felt I missed smoe clarity to the visuals... Especially the fast moving stuff.

I think Matrix Reloaded's story was pretty weak. I felt the movie's fight scenes (which were immense and havent been surpassed and probably wont be for a while), were the centre piece of that movie. They probably wrote the fight scenes and then decided to add the story to revolve around the fight scenes. This was why the entire movie felt as if Neo was walking around in the Matrix, picking fights with different people/agents.

Matrix Revolutions, returned to place the plot as the most important feature of the movie and to this end we got a stronger plot and better overall film.

Special FX are great, but a nothing beats a great storyline. The reason why Terminator2 was so great was that the special FX (which were ground breaking), added to the plot. In fact, the plot would not have worked, had they not included the SFX, as the baddie of that movie was one big SFX.

I'm hoping Avatar has a good storyline and isnt just a vehicle to display what SFX can be achieved in 2009, a la Transformers2.

Absolutely loved the film, thought it was superb. I know the story is a generic one but I really enjoyed it.

It was made much more pleasurable viewing also with the amount of female Navi side-boob on show. I found myself very attracted to them. Bizarre.

Couldn't recommend it highly enough to anyone. I went to see it with my girlfriend who went in thinking it looked silly and boring. She came out of it thinking as highly of it as I did.

Go and see it.

I should be seeing this in 3D tommorrow but... I simply cannot see without my 'proper glasses' will 3D glasses result in me not being able to wear my normal specs?

This film seems to realy have impressed you guys (with a range of different reasons :p) I do actually look forward to seeing it now - when working on the film to be fair nothing was in 3D so maybe I missed the whole point of it.

I watched it have to say it was good. It was a wow fest. The plot the acting were pretty awful. It had a hell of of a lot of cheese and cliches.

The CGI the visuals were very good though, I hate CGI for CGI's sake but the aliens Nabu whatever their called they were passable(maybe a bit more than that, I dont know if it was the 3D, but they did seem like real aliens, although I dont think any aliens would ever look like them), you forget about any flaws after a while, and the flaws are close to miniscule, even when its digital. The clarity is excellent, its like the textures of the clothes and their braded hairs, they look so real you can almost touch them.

The 3D wasnt like looking through a window though, its more like the red green taken to the nth level. Certain things have certain levels where they stick out from one another(some objects do go right back into the screen). And those objects pop out from their surroundings, its almost as if Sigourney Weaver was right in front of you(plus brief 3D boobies, not Sigourney's).

However there was no real quiet moments, no characterisation, everything had to be about the plot and moving it forward. The plot was a complete wishful thinking, preachy fanfiction(I dont know how many orgasms Cameron must have had coming up with it), with elements of Final Fantasy nonsense.

That action wasnt that great, if it wasnt in 3D it would be mediocre. I knew what was going to happen before it happened.

There's no way I can see it being worth to watch in 2D on a DVD. Yeah it was mostly trash but it made my eyes Esplode. I garuantee people will get tired of 3D if it continues like this, but first out of the door first wins(I know it wasnt the first 3D film but it was the first I saw, so it wins, unless something better comes along, which I doubt, because it'll only likely be used as a substitue for plot and things we used to have in films).

I wear normal glasses and I'm seeing it tonight in 3D, so will report if it's a problem. Looking online it shouldn't be, but 2hrs 40mins of wearing two glasses on my head may result in soreness above the ears and headaches! Hopefully not, but I shall see.

Unless you have gigantic plastic Jarvis Cocker NHS specs they should fit over the top comfortably.:p

EDIT: I've watched two movies with normal glasses and 3D glasses over the top without any problems, and the 3D didn't give me headaches or nausea or eyeburn or syphillis or any other side effects either.

Just seen the 3D version.

Really stunning visuals, and very immersive. The detail on the characters/animation is by far the best I've seen.

Like someone said above, it does get a bit predictable towards the end though.

Saw it in IMAX 3D this morning. It's not a masterpiece but it certainly doesn't disappoint. Stunning, literally jaw-dropping visuals - the most beautiful movie I've seen in a long time. The plot is decent enough and it's otherwise a solid action movie and a fun ride. This is an unmissable movie and absolutely needs the cinema experience; IMAX is worth the extra effort.

So which is better seeing it in IMAX or seeing it in 3D?

It's the same technology I think. IMAX will probably have a bigger screen and better sound though. I'm going to the london bfi one and the screen is the height of 5 double decker buses!

The cardiff IMAX (that opened last night) doesn't have the giant screen, in fact it is the only IMAX I have EVER been too where they use a regular screen......

The movie was great, not one of the best ever but as others say it is definately worth watching, I enjoyed it.

Personally, I'd go to the best cinema near you. Digital with the biggest scope presentation you can find, I personally prefer 2.35:1 by miles and this film certainly benefits from it. I assume at the imax presentations it was cropped to 1.85:1/1.78:1?
