Driving in snow

I'm just going to check my oil levels and take the car round the block as I need stuff from town, should be interesting as everything is frozen solid round here.

What gets me is the idiocy of some local councils - Been driving around in the snow and ice for a good 3 days now and been OK but stopped this morning in the local car park in town only to get stuck trying to get out.

They hadn't even made a token attempt at gritting what is effectively the main car park - and it's on a slope. What had happened was all the snow was compacted into sheet ice and people were basically falling down the length of the car park - 3 cars were stuck at the bottom bounced off other parked cars.

When I parked up I intended to carry on driving down the hill then up out the other side but I was warned away as everyone else had got stuck there - so I had to back out, stop, and attempt to drive up the icy hill - just wasn't going to happen with the LSD, wide tires and low traction. I almost got out but it got worse closer to the top and I just started going sideways. Even just slightly slipping the clutch in 2nd it would just spin up and start walking sideways! :o

Eventually I got out - 3 very helpful guys walked me back aroudn the cars so I could reverse down the slope (which was where I wanted to go originally), and carried on backing up the other side of the hill. Much relief and grins all round :D

Really irritating though - for the sake of one sweep with a gritter, the car park would be perfectly useable - but as is, it's just dangerous - and it's not like they haven't had warning, or time, to get around to it!

Of course, the general population wasn't being helpful by just driving right point blank up to where you were sat (trying to get out) and just staring at you, so you'd end up with a que of cars behind, or in front of you, with no room to maneuver safely....God-damn you all :p

drive home from work that usually takes 20mins ..took an hr due to the snow/ice. was funny seeing some people in 4x4 getting it all wrong ...especially someone in a pimped out overfinch RR sport , nearly slid into the back of another car then it slid to the side due to the camber of the road, i could see the passanger cringe! lol :o :D

hmmm the work car park was fun today.....as I was reminded when i got an email with some CCTV screen captures in from a colleague :D

Grrr, got my car stuck turning around after parking! Just had 2 people push my zed backwards as wide tyres simply don't help at all :p I must admit, even at 15mph it's fun in a scary way :)

What annoys me, is that even in the center of town where it is still icey and my back end is snaking......some idiots were just sat on my rear bumper practically pushing me forward  I mean tail gating in this weather is just going against all common sense? Bits of brake light plastic scattered all over town, surely people aren't this thick?

This is exactly why I don't want to go out in my car until the roads are better.

Not only does the council seem to 'forget' to grit the majority of roads around here so they are just solid compacted snow, you get idiots sitting 2 foot off your bumper.

Don't see why people think it's so big and clever to go out driving in snow regardless. Yes I may be being a bit girly not going out but at least I won't be posting up a 'stacked it' thread this time tomorrow.

Plus I'm not convinced wide tyres, RWD, 240bhp and no TC is a good recipe for snow driving anyway.

LSD will help you by still applying power to the wheel with all the traction, without it the wheel with no traction gets all the power. :)

Yea, I know :) Just with the LSD it seems to make the car a lot more prone to powering itself sideways at any given opportunity! :p Didn't help anyway, given the fact there was nil traction at either wheel for the most part :D

Surviving some hard frosts too :p

So far done about 150 miles in the snowy and icy conditions and it's been OK but you really do have to treat the accelerator like it's got eggshells underneath it as otherwise it just spins up and steps out - not uncontrollably so, mind :)

I wish I was in a position to just go out and buy one of those! Was scouting round on AT earlier looking for something RWD with an LSD to buy since my E34 has gone... No such luck :(

Ahaha you legend MrK :D :D

Lashout, you have to stop posting pics of your mk3 Supra. Seriously giving me the horn :o

So when you selling it? ;)

My car is currently abandoned on the entry hill to my estate. I was one of these people who said so what if I have a lot of power it doesn't mean I have to use it all. I guess even feathering the throttle and pulling away in 3rd is useless.
