British man to be exectuted by Chinese

I can quite easily see someone like that being duped into carrying drugs with the promise of a huge career in the film industry.

I'd like to know more about the background of the man's mental illness, whether he had been taking his medication regularly, whether he had been keeping psychiatrist appointments etc or any indication of his mental state. Even then it would be hard to make a judgment.

He previously worked as a taxi driver in london so he did have some level of cognizance. The mental illness just sounds like a last ditch attempt to avoid the death penalty.

By saying that you are assuming that bipolar disorder affects a person in the same way every day. It's more complex than that! Why do you think that psychiatrists section people with bipolar under the Mental Health Act not when they are having a good stable period, which for your information does happen, but when the symptoms flare up which can happen at any time?

The mental illness just sounds like a last ditch attempt to avoid the death penalty.

That is your perception but it's also very clear that you have a strong opinion and very little understanding of bipolar disorder.

You'd think magick who has frequently described experiences that sound like schizophrenia would understand mental illness more ;)

Alcoholics can easily die if they go cold turkey....they seize which can lead to suffocation

Yep you can have seizures if you drink heavily and are physically addicted and suddenly stop. That is why doctors give you drugs (benzos) to ease the withdrawl and ti decrease the risk of having a seizure!!! That guy who posted about being a pansy doesn't have a bloody clue what its like.

Well what do you expect from the man who can withstand any torture and will brutally murder you for insulting him!

(midde tile is actually a quote of one of his posts, all credit to nitefly for making comic)

Weren't like 90% of the executions on the planet carried out in China last year or something insane like that?

This man was mentally-ill and victim of being targetted and taken advantage of by individuals who seeked to decieve him into smuggling drugs for a reward which is itself seems not pluasable and fits well with his side of the story. Both Chinese and British psychiatrists have stated that he's mentally ill and therefore should not be held accountable for his actions, under diminished responsibility.

At most he should be imprisoned but not executed. All this time-wasting prosecuting an innocent man with Bi-polar could be spent actually catching the real scumbags who put this man through this ordeal in the first place.

Probably going to repeat points which have already been made but hey ho.

He's been found guilty of drug smuggling in a country where the penalty is death. None of us know all the facts of the case, so is he really mentally ill none of us can know for sure.

How would we feel if our courts found someone guilty of a serious crime. Then the country of this person's nationality, being more liberal believing it's own justice system is more just comes knocking telling us our punishment is incorrect and unfair.

We'd probably tell them to go swing.

I agree execution is never right. But you gotta really follow the rule a country has. If he know it was possible execution on drug smuggling in China....he still did it knowing the risk.

You try not to stroke a lion in the cage because you might get a nasty nip.

How is that, no-one forces them to take heroin whether it is legal or illegal.

See my subsequent posts, but basically because the culture surrounding heroin is far more damaging than the heroin itself and a direct result of illegality.

None of the arguments for prohibition really stand up in the face of legislation, control and rehabilitation. It just puts money into undesirable people's hands.
Legalisation is the sensible thing to do but when you still have people writing to the BBC because someone said "****" before the watershed, I doubt it would get through parliament.

This gentlemen, regardless of whether or not he is well, broke the laws of China and will be punished under their system. We can try our best to get him out of the country and deal with him here, but if they won't release him, that's that.

Tip of the day: Don't commit crimes that carry the death penalty! :o

Not quite making it legal, but making it less illegal provided positive results.

Tsk, tsk Dolph you know as well as I that correlation does not equal causation and the fact that it was dropping already seems to suggest no link at all. :D
