Geek Pet Hates.

LOL

I love these threads, sooner or later someone comes along and makes themselves look really, really silly :D

I'm sorry but my cable modem doesn't make a screeching sound, maybe I should phone Virgin Media to complain and get my money back?

Guys?

Technically what we refer to as an ADSL or Cable modem isnt actually a modem as no MODulation or DEmodulation occurs. So the guy who first posted that is right, but its a silly thing to get annoyed about.

Calling it an ADSL modem is perfectly acceptable as to the consumer it does the same thing as a traditional modem; gives them the interwebz!

No sir. I blindly believe everything Wikipedia tells me, and as such I must disagree with you. In fact, even a cable modem is still a modem, and getting annoyed at someone for calling their Virgin cable modem a "modem" is like getting annoyed at someone for calling their Ferrari a "car". ;)

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rig

That's where it comes from. Aside from the fact that my rig [yeah, I went there] is rather haphazardly plugged together, with rawl plugs holding my motherboard to my case and a custom support (cannibalised shelf bracket) for my graphics card which sits loose in the PCI slot and threatens to collapse if not supported properly (thus making the whole thing a bit 'rigged' together), I've always used 'rig' to differentiate between package-deal PCs and those you build yourself. I understand that it can be annoying to hear on an enthusiast forum, but I've noticed that those who object seem to have no backup for their dislike of the term further than falling back on "it's not a rig, it's a PC" which, as highlighted, isn't exhaustive as a definition. I think I'll continue to distinguish between home builds and shop deals by using the term 'rig', same as I'll call all vacuum cleaners 'hoovers' and all cola 'coke'.
It's that I can't back it up, I just hate the sound of some one calling a PC a "rig".

A "Hi-fi Rig" on the other hand, I quite understand, I would say a hi-fi rig is comprised of many things, an amp, AC/reciever/CD player (and I suppose you could hadd a BD Player amongst other things).

Or a guitar rig, which is either a 19" rack of all your guitar hardware, or all your pedals/effects boxes "rigged up".

A PC on the other hand is, to me, you need all the parts for it to work (within reason of course) and "rig" doesn't make it sound right, I would think a PC can be part of a rig (audio rig for example), but a PC itself isn't a rig.

Oh yeah, people who say rawl plugs!

They're WALL plugs, rawl is just a brand, the amount of times some one has tried to initiate an argument with me because I've said "wall plug" and they've went "IT'S RAWL PLUG, OKAY?" :p

People who dont understand the concept of the filing system so have no idea where they saved/downloaded a file to.

"Did you save it?"
"yes"
"where did you save it?"
"on the computer"

I hate backgrounds which are bright and colourful (too distracting), or worse, a crap pic taken on a mobile stretched to fit (and not stretched an equal percentage in both directions)

I think it's some kind of auto-signature, though I could be wrong. A lot of our users at work have a 'sent from my Blackberry' or 'sent from my Windows Mobile phone' signature.

I didn't know that, i'll have to try from my HD (;)) and see if I have that.:p

EDIT: Not on my HD it doesn't, however it's sending through MSN instead of an exchange server which may be where the difference is.

Yes it's an auto-signature when you send emails from an iPhone but it's easy to change or turn off.

But that doesn't explain why they are all over forums and threads...

Used the phone to type the reply presumably.

Well obviously, the question was why they put that they are posting the post from their iPhone.:p

Same reason so many iPhone users bring their phones up in conversation and spend more time with it in their hands than their pocket im guessing...

also, people who use a word doc as a big container for multiple images, usually resized/scewed to high heaven

I can confirm that it is not automatic. I post occasionally from my iPhone and it adds no "posted from my iPhone" automatically.

You'll find a lot of people have iPhones as they feel it's some sort of status symbol, those same people need to tell everyone at every opportunity that they have one (like when ending a post).

My own personal geek hate is adding people on Facebook when I've had (a little ;)) to drink. Made some interesting contacts that way though so perhaps it's all good?
