Geek Pet Hates.

Here is another one:

People who buy a brand new HDTV or Laptop and keep the stickers on them and refuse to remove them. The stickers that say things like 3 x HDMI ports and DNIE+ on HDTVs and '4GB RAM - Great for multitasking' on laptops.

Ugh I agree, but I keep the intel, nvidia and windows version sticker on. :)

The Intel, Windows, AMD and so are fine, it's the stickers with the specification or features on that get to me, the ones that are used for the shop to sell you the item.

There's loads, from cluttered desktop to deletion of a line of text just to correct one typo. Also hitting keys harder if something isn't working as expected.

My main gripe at the moment, is people referring to their computer as their 'Rig'.

 I HATE when people call PCs "rigs".

IT'S A PC, NOT A RIG.

I really don't understand where it comes from, you don't "rig" together a PC, you shove boards in slots and cables in sockets. Where does "rig" come from?

That folder on my desktop just contains shortcuts to the 3 games I'm currently playing.

Whenever a new Windows comes out and all and sundry try and market their products as "optimised for Windows XY".

I've seen monitors with "optimised for Vista" on them. :/

I take them all off as soon as I verify the laptop is OK. Bit of WD-40 and a paper towel and the residue comes right off.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rig

Rig
–verb
3. to assemble, install, or prepare (often fol. by up).
4. to manipulate fraudulently
–noun
6. apparatus for some purpose; equipment; outfit; gear: a hi-fi rig

That's where it comes from. Aside from the fact that my rig [yeah, I went there] is rather haphazardly plugged together, with rawl plugs holding my motherboard to my case and a custom support (cannibalised shelf bracket) for my graphics card which sits loose in the PCI slot and threatens to collapse if not supported properly (thus making the whole thing a bit 'rigged' together), I've always used 'rig' to differentiate between package-deal PCs and those you build yourself. I understand that it can be annoying to hear on an enthusiast forum, but I've noticed that those who object seem to have no backup for their dislike of the term further than falling back on "it's not a rig, it's a PC" which, as highlighted, isn't exhaustive as a definition. I think I'll continue to distinguish between home builds and shop deals by using the term 'rig', same as I'll call all vacuum cleaners 'hoovers' and all cola 'coke'.

People that after years of using a computer still can't work out when they should single/double click.

People that think because you work in IT you suddenly know everything about any piece of technology even if you've never seen/used it before.

People that ask me to fix a problem and the problem ends up being that the computer isn't switched on/plugged in.

My one is people using the term modem for ADSL and Cable kit.

A modem is a device that converts digital to analogue, ADSL and Cable terminal adaptors don't do this, so they aren't modems. And any way a proper modem should make screeching sounds and have a row of lights on the front.
LOL

I love these threads, sooner or later someone comes along and makes themselves look really, really silly :D

I'm sorry but my cable modem doesn't make a screeching sound, maybe I should phone Virgin Media to complain and get my money back?

Guys?

I do kind of miss the screeching noise. Every one was different and I used to be able to do a pretty decent accurate impression of my first 56k modem.

Shut up, I'm cool...

People that call an iPod Touch an iTouch.

People that insist on posting that they are posting their post from their iPhone...

No other phone users say what phone they are posting from so why iPhone users?

My biggest gripes are TOUCHING MY SCREENS!!! (Yes my family know how touchy I am about it and I regularly shout at people that do it, even if I don't know them that well.:o).

...Swiftly followed by people using two hands to navigate with a laptop touchpad. You don't need to position your hands on top of each other so one is moving the curser and the other hovering over the left "mouse" button. Just use one hand and tap the damn touch pad, using your little finger for the right mouse button. It's like having both hands on a normal mouse, noe moving it and the other clicking the button.:confused:

Other than that, there should be no more than 3-4 icons on your desktop (My computer, Documents, Recycle bin), your image should not be stretched or pixelated (create an image the right pixel dimensions, it's not ****** difficult) and the task bar should be on the left hand side of the screen, with the start button at the top..;)

For some reason, it irritates me when people refuse to use the backspace key. They notice a mistake, use the cursor key to step left through the word back past the mistake, then use the delete key. Or, worse, click vaguely close to the mistake, then use the cursor keys to step to the mistake, then use the delete key.

I think it's some kind of auto-signature, though I could be wrong. A lot of our users at work have a 'sent from my Blackberry' or 'sent from my Windows Mobile phone' signature.
