The Official Motorola Milestone Thread

Yeah. If you want a 3.7" Capacitive touch screen Android device they are ten a penny. But ones with a slide out keyboard appear to be.... Just the Milestone, and no plans for any others. Everyone just seems to be copying the iPhone.

Well then the iPhone copied the WMO devices before it without a hardware keyboard... right?

It's a current market trend, and saves time and space.

Haha :p

Haven't people with the droid got the 2.0.1 update now?

I think so.

Taken from a forum RE: the 2.0.1 update.

Just because iPhone had a virtual keyboard first doesn't mean every other phone after it is copying the iPhone now.

A virtual keyboard is the eventual shift that phones are heading and the current batch of smartphones with capacitive screens do them very very well.

The only reason do have a hardware keyboard really is for specific apps (emulation/gaming) and of course for purists who still don't believe in virtual keyboards.

I can now type just as fast on my HTC Magic as I can on the G1.

Its not so much that, it just appears companies arent experimenting with different styles. Before the phone we had plane slabs with big screens, slide out keyboards, fold open phones with screens that could be twisted, the strange slide up screens on the Sidekicks, etc.

Now, with the iPhone, the majority of phones are following the large screen slab style. Its not a bad design, but I just like to be able to access a keyboard without having to cover the contents of the screen to launch it. Its personal preference, but my choice is limited with the lack of physical keyboard devices.

But If the Milestone doesnt officially get the Android 2.1 update then I may forget my physical keyboard likes and get a Nexus.

Heads up people! Today marks the start of the 24.5 day period where the milestones' camera focuses properly! make use of it as much as you can!

I don't get it?

Also is it just me or has the price dropped?! A penny under £400 at the previously-exclusive place now! And they have some funky trade-in scheme now aswell (up to £100 off if you give them your old phone... the rates suck though!).

Yes it has dropped, not surprised either. Probably hoping the price drop will tempt people away from the Nexus.

yeah, the Droid got the 2.0.1 update almost a month ago. Milestone users are still waiting.

the milestone/droid both have the same problem where they don't autofocus properly for 24.5 days, then work fine for 24.5 days, then don't work. it's very well documented, i'm surprised you've not heard about it.

Emailed Motorola to ask about Android 2.1...

Thank you for contacting Motorola.

In response to your e-mail, we would like to inform you that the version 2.1 has not been officially announced or released by Google. The only update that has been announced and will be available in Europe within the next two weeks is the 2.0.1.

For any further assistance or information please do not hesitate to contact us again, quoting your Customer Reference number.

Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you.

There a bit behind, wasn't Android 2.1 officially announced yesterday along with the Nexus? But either way, gives a date to those people who want the 24.5 day Camera Focus problem fixed.

For anyone who has owned an Android handset, is it normal to expect official updates within the same version (i.e. all the 2.x updates)? Or are you locked to the version you bought with the phone minus any bug fixes, like the 2.0.1 update?

Having just spent a couple of hours looking though screenshot threads picking out great apps and noticing just how rapidly the Android community is picking up pace in terms of developing widgets and applications, Ive come to the conclusion, Android looks great!

Unfortunately all that has done is remove the HD2 and N900 from my shortlist, I still need to decide on the Milestone or the Nexus....

Read the Engadget review of the Nexus. That should lead you to realising the Milestone is the right choice.

I have done.

It comes down to a toss up between a physical keyboard, which I would prefer, or a CPU that is twice as fast and (confirmed) Andrid 2.1, which I would also prefer!

Im just reluctant to do anything without holding the Milestone. If the keyboard is too small to use then the Milestone has no features that put it ahead of the Nexus.

The CPU is not that much faster, it's been noticed that the difference is negligible.

I think the keyboard will be fine for me, then again I have quite dainty hands for a bloke. I think you might find it a struggle.

I'd probably use the virtual keyboard 7 times out of 10, but it's nice to have the keyboard there for Emulators and more advanced apps.

Not tried the physical keyboard with the Droid yet. However as Janesy already said, the virtual keyboard will be a very good experience (just like on my magic) because of the capacative screen and 3.7" screen. Also i dont find it too fiddley to use onscreen d-pad, but that's cause i only have a bunch of GBA RPG's loaded up on my phone (OMG i love being able to playing the Final Fantasy series, Advance wars and Fire Eblem on my phone! :D)

Edit: I've noticed that this badboy can be had for £400 now! Ooh it's tempting to sell my Magic to fund a Droid.... Birthdays just round the corner and all that :p

No, the Nexus CPU is nearly 2x the speed, it just seems to not make much difference in terms of how Android feels, that's liable to change at some point.

Yes but from the whole Pentium 4 vs AMD thing, we know clearly that MHz does not always equal performance. I have a 2.66GHz processor in my PC which is faster than the 3.8GHz processor in my old PC...

A point worth remembering is the Nexus One doesn't have multi-touch. It makes some operations really difficult, like the the virtual keyboard. Also no hardware keys and no multitouch make some apps (like emulators) almost impossible to play properly.
