Golf vs Focus

I think the Golf would be the better all round car (better handling, more refined), but the Focus is much better value for money.

It really depends what you're going for really. Simple town runaround? Warm/Hot hatch? Something to cover a distance in?

Nobody can really answer the question otherwise.

Since when has a Golf offered better handling than a Focus? Thats always been the main strength of the Focus and the reason it tends to top the class despite lower perceived levels of quality. The Golf is not a great handling car in the cooking models - probably as a result of the fact they've gone more for refinement and quality and less for driving dynamics.

If I suddenly had an urge to spend £12k on a Golf and all that got me was a 3 year old one I'd finance myself up to find the extra £3k for a brand new one :/

Who are the idiots paying £12,000 for 3 year old Golfs

Not I! Even 12k is a push unless you're buying private.

Like I say, for £14k, all I could find were 05/06 examples with mileages approaching 60k when looking at five doors.

As for Handling, I'd probably agree that the Golf GTI probably just edges it over the ST and it is only slightly, but the rest of the car is still boring as hell. Standard Focus would probably take it for the "normal" models imo.

They've just raised Golf GTI prices, DSG version £26,000 :(

What are they playing at? Oh and dont worry about it being close to the R version, thats up to £30,000

I always thought the Focus was the better handling car but the Golf was more rounded after all. This is the first thread in the entire world outside of a VW forum where people have suggested the Golf is actually some sort of handling leader

This is a hard one for me to answer honestly & without bias as I am a Dub fan. The prob I have is answering how I feel when the new ones seems crap to me.
So...
I'd say if you are buying a late one then go Focus as it's a good car to drive & Excellent value for money.
If you go Retro like me then you Cannot beat an old Dub.

It may be a different story for the lower models, but I'm certain of my conclusion for the GTI vs ST. But its only very slightly, and its possible that some of it is down to the Golf sporting less power (I've not tested the likes of the ED30).

No matter how much better the handling, no matter how much better value, and no matter how much more fun to drive the Focus is, I just couldn't live with the Fisher Price interior.

When driving, I spend 99% of my time plodding away at 30-50 mph, not zooming round empty A-roads and tracks. Therefore I want the interior to provide a pleasant ambience and environment for a relaxing journey / commmute, so I care more about the general sense of the interior than slightly improved handling. That's especially true considering how close the Golf GTi is to the Focus ST in handling terms.

The difference isn't as big as Robbie G suggests, but yes, the Golf interior is nicer without a doubt.

The golf has a nice steering wheel, but the cloth seats in the GTI are

That particular Focus interior is horrible - but most aren't like that. Also, you've compared the 09 Golf GTI interior to a bog standard Focus interior from, what, 2005?
