Aussie to UK - looking for some advice?

I would only consider moving here if you are likely to earn a hell of a lot more money than there.

That way, you can earn your wedge and bugger back off at the earliest opportunity.

This country has gone to the dogs, house prices are extortionate, it rains most of the time and if you live anywhere else apart from London, I expect the locals will find it hard to accept that you are not pulling their pints in the local pub.

If you do decide, well best of luck! :)

I'm sure he's had enough of the "OMG BROKEN BRITAIN!!1111" posts now, let's save the thread for the actual advice he's asking for?

Personally I'd like to live around Richmond/Twickenham or Windsor (I live near enough there now) if I had the choice. Good links to London and easy access to Heathrow plus lots of decent bars/restaurants, river etc.

No I'm sure he'd prefer to live somewhere where some 12 year old will try to bottle you for asking for the time...

To be fair, it's not all bad but given the choice before hand I'd advise moving to London and taking advantage of the close proximity of Europe and the East Coast of the US. I would never consider moving from NZ or Aus to rural England - I couldn't think of anything more depressing.

You really need to look into why people actually move here from Oz and why expats actually want to come back, one mans sugar and all that. :)

Yeah - I know why the majority of Aussies and Kiwis move over here, and that's for the travel opportunities and earning the pound. I'd imagine that expats just get homesick for family and a good Yorkshire Pudding... Perhaps something deep fried... like pizza...

Homesick for family is the main reason, (must try this deep fried pizza you talk about, sounds nom nom :p ), closely followed by homesick for the culture, and strangely enough realising that life in Oz as a permanent resident is completely different from the one month holiday seems to be the one that gets them every time :rolleyes: . Factor in quite a large amount of hatred towards poms who move there, the list goes on.

Personally if I was the op I would do what my Sister is planning and rent out the house in Oz, come over here and stop with relatives, get a feel for the place then make a decision.
 
Cornwall is an idea ,the place is full of aussie life guards all summer and has a good outdoor lifestyle 130k would get a terrace in Redruth maybe

£130K isn't enough for the South West really, well for the South in general TBH. Sorry.

maybe we should reconsider
we were looking for a change, but some of these points are helpful too
we don't have jobs to go to - but we wouldn't be desperate for cash but we were hoping to buy something cheap - how much would we need? you guys say 130 000 isn't enough
thanks for the tips of places you like especially about the places near Glastonbury and also the suggestions about Edinburough

I know Oz is good we love it, but sometimes a change is good too
 
If you're not going to London but want a change I reckon you're better off moving somewhere else in Aus. Or NZ. From a former Tasmanian...

A 2 bed flat would be ok or semi detached but not an estate - we live in the Country here and a flat in an estate would kill us I think

we picked 130 000 because we thought (wrongly) that we might get an entry level type place for that...............

You would, you could get a 2 bedroom flat in cornwall for that which would be nice :)
