Aussie to UK - looking for some advice?

I'm sure he's had enough of the "OMG BROKEN BRITAIN!!1111" posts now, let's save the thread for the actual advice he's asking for?

Personally I'd like to live around Richmond/Twickenham or Windsor (I live near enough there now) if I had the choice. Good links to London and easy access to Heathrow plus lots of decent bars/restaurants, river etc.

thanks man

One piece of advice- When people say "alright" it just means hi in most cases and you can just respond with "alright" or "yeah alright you". A few aussies I know have had trouble understanding it. :D

really? I got that right away
I reckon Americans might struggle with it but I picked it up pretty quickly

what I didn't work out was that you had to crank the handle a few times to flush the toilet :)
after that I was fine

OP, seriously reconsider this move :)

Where about in Kingston did you stay? I lived in Thames Ditton - just up the road - for several years and loved it. I would never consider living there again though.

How about we swap?

You come live in my house and go live in yours...

SORTED.

I am joking by the way...

damn we nearly got excited then...............

I moved to Aus from London 2 years ago & would move back in a heartbeat. Aus really isn't the mecca people make it out to be. A few things that get me down:-

Weather is either too hot, raining or nicely warm but too windy
Taking into account the crap salary you get paid here the cost of living is more then London.
E-commerce is virtually non existent.
Costs a fortune to go abroad.
Speeding fines for going 2k over the limit & cars in general are ultra expensive
AFL
Public Transport
Blatant racism

I could spend all night making a list & before people ask we do plan to move back in a few years but have personal stuff that requires us to be here for now.

If you do decide then look at scotland, you have some better laws for buying/selling houses, you dont have to pay the extra fee`s for university and prescriptions are free. Unlike england where you can get shafted on the day your supposed to move house, and theres nothing you can dop about it. If you want your kids to go into higher education, they will be paying for it for the rest of their lives and its almost £18 for a prescription.

House prices might be better too.

Havent you considered canada ? Lol

Obviously there is a lot of ‘the grass is greener’ going on and only somebody who has properly lived in both places can truly comment on this.

I think I preferred Australia to the UK and I’m not sure it was purely down to the fact it was just ‘new’. I live in a particularly nice area where there is very little crime so that aspect of the UK doesn’t bother me. I can see Dartmoor from my window so I benefit from nice scenery as well, and I’m a few miles from one of the finest natural harbours in the country.

But there just seems to be something about the UK. I think its people – there are too many of them. Everywhere you go, within reason, there are loads of people there. You cant make a journey on the roads in daylight hours without being part of a procession of a million other people, everywhere is very tightly packed in, etc etc.

There was a much bigger feeling of space in Aus. Sure, its far bigger, so there should be. But everything was just better sized right down to the way the towns were built. Proper 8 lane wide high streets with shops either side instead of congested tight streets blocked by a muppet in a white van. Australia has masses of huge long empty highways which pass by epic scenery. It’s just great. But the motorway services suck.

Less of the incessant health and safety mafia stuff that infests this country – the main railway line into Cairns ran alongside the road. And it wasn’t fenced. Because hey, it’s a railway line. Stand on it and you might get hit by a train.

In this country we have to have a 10 foot fence with razor wire and a sign every metre in 15 different languages to explain that trains might kill you.

The people seemed so much friendlier. The climate is… different. Better? Dunno, but the climate in this country is just so boring, isn’t it?

The climate in this country can be described as ‘meh’. With the exception of the odd freak bit of weather (ie the last few weeks!) in the UK its overcast and about 10-15c. That’s it. It doesn’t really change. Just continual ‘meh’. How exciting.

Everything just seems so chilled out. Over here if you crash your car you take it to an ‘Accident Repair Specialist’ yet in Aus, they are called ‘Smash repairers’. A spade is indeed a spade, and its quite refreshing.

Plus the animals are totally cool. How awesome is the Kangeroo?

It’s not all good, though. The speed limits are ridiculously low yet the roads long, empty and safe and the cars big and powerful. Couple this with over zealous police offers and its frustrating. Chocolate is expensive. Luxury cars are eye wateringly expensive due to the taxation levied on them. The TV channels are crap.

I really liked it though and I was only there for 6 weeks. It’s just so much less… ‘average’ than the UK.

We also call them panel beaters.

:)

Cornwall or London, the rest of the country is a waste of space :p

If you're going to live outside of a city, live in Cornwall as it's by far the best county for 'outside a city' living.

If you're going to live in a city, live in London as it's by far the best city for 'inside a city' living.

Anywhere else in the country will just be an inferior compromise

At the moment its about 40c in Aus, i know i wouldn't enjoy that.

Cars wise, you are right, and because of the cities are all located near the sea, the sea breeze with the salt content creates havoc to the cars. You need a car to get around though because it is so big and the public transport it is so crap. Food wise, depends what you get, some are cheap, but alcohol are really expensive.

Oh, i love the fact that they call an off licence a "The Bottle Shop".

That said, the girls there are amazing, really amazing................

You would, you could get a 2 bedroom flat in cornwall for that which would be nice :)

Cornwall's nice, have a cottage down there not far from the coast.

What i advise is if you can afford it, look for somewhere out of the city.
