Aussie to UK - looking for some advice?

I have "lived"over in Aus for 12 months just about , here's my quick summary.

The weather is awesome mainly hot.

If you get away from the cities Aboriginal's are a awesome to talk to and there opinions on things. Somewhat surprisingly they are very interested in our Royal family and are very religious.

Which takes me on to my next point Australia as a general rule is VERY racists with Aboriginal's , Asian population and generally anyone else who isn't white!

Wages are relatively good all depending on what you do?!?! I work in one of these "drive through bottleshops" :eek::cool: How does 17-18 GBP a hour sound for serving cartons of beer??

Been a Pom you get to have great banter with Australians and once you get used to it and give them some **** back you can make some awesome friendships.

So I think it is possible to make a new life out here for yourselves it not all great and you do have some hardtimes getting used to things. But I know i'm going yo miss my job , new Aussy friends , my home and the weather....

Good job a year of travelling Asia is ahead of me with no work!

As for England i'll still be coming home at somepoint , it is still home, I still believe its a good country for various reasons ( $900 for a ambulance anyone?) So if anyone is thinking about moving to England then i'd say give it a go it's no better or worse then Australia there just different!
 
Unless you are minted or want to join the doll don't move here. Fact.

Sure it isn't perfect but I think it would be a while before I got bored of having a house 2x the size and constant sun. Must be terrible.
 
Quite depressing reading the start of this thread (I live in the UK). Just agreeing with what a few people have said, going somewhere to live and going somewhere for holiday is completely different.

Not sure what it is, but I've never been to Australia and dont seem to have a desire to go yet(could be because its not been an option because everyone says you need at the very least two weeks to 'do' Australia).

Even though my gf is studying in Melbourne at the moment, I've suggested we meet up in Japan.:p

Vancouver be one of my choices of places to move to.

The sun, seems to make 'everything' grow bigger ;) and beautiful.

This is something that has always plagued the back of my mind about Australia. Ive worked with many Australians in the last 5 years (as my last and current project are for australian clients) as well as working with others who have worked out there before. A lot of them arent afraid to speak their minds about what they think of Aborigines.
Guess I'll find out myself when I move there in April for 12 months.
 
Could always do a self build. 130k would probably get you a decent bit of land and a nice bungalow/cottage around Suffolk.

Locations can be deceiving it would appear, I live in London, I'm not from here but I appreciate the attempt as disparaging the city and the country I'm living in.

At the risk of stating the obvious what I'm talking about is the phrases that are used and the particular manner of speech that many Cornish have. It's nice in many ways but I was responding to a jokey post in kind rather than attempting a damning indictment of the Cornish.

OP: Don't worry about all the untravelled inward- facing idiots on here; they have no idea what the rest of the world is like and don't realise how lucky they are to live in the UK.

Somerset/ Avon/ Devon is very nice, and I much prefer living in the South to the North personally (Have lived in Sheffield, Leeds, and York all for at least one year).
 
You will find job hunting harder in the south west due to a server lack of industry. House prices are very high in nice quiet areas which are easily commutable as people have second homes down this way so competition for them is high. I would recommend doubling your budget for what I personally deem a "nice" property.

There will be plenty of county councils that you should aim for, research the current organisation as they are all very different in how they operate and the aims they are trying to achieve. Make sure you are happy with the prospects of the organisation you may enter.

The job market in the UK is starting to show signs of improving and I would highly recommend finding a job first as you may be out of work for longer than you planned and cost of living is relatively high.

If you have friends and family who have done similar moves then talk to them and see how they got on and what they found worked. I have never tried to emigrate so no idea how easy it is to find a job when not being from the UK in local government.

I would research more on house prices to make sure you can find somewhere within budget. Then to find a job and once one of you is sorted work wise move on over with some level of financial security.

Depends how far south and west you want to go; The Bristol area will have a number of decent opportunities, and you can still commute from Somerset or west Wiltshire.

Its not that there are racist in nasty way , just maybe there attitude towards different races are maybe 15 - 20 years behind maybe Europe or certainly U.K

Its hard to explain , but after spending a time in Perth , Broome and Darwin for working racism is certainly around.

Across the east coast which I have only visited as a tourist it wasn't as obvious , purely because I didn't work or socialize within the community of the given cities town.

As for the people who say they would love to come out here Uk is crap etc etc. I would say Australia is a awesome place to come and work visit , but it really is no better then the UK just different. Someways better like the weather , roads and the friendliness of those Aussies! The negatives well I think i'm mentioned them enough:p

All in all its good, but its not the dream lifestyle everybody thinks it is ;)

Parts of wiltshire are pretty nice too forgot about that.

South West is pretty dire jobwise but as mentioned above as you get towards Bristol it does pickup quite a bit - and when I was last looking around there was quite a lot of middle management type roles around North Somerset for some reason - which were on reasonable pay if you have the skills.

Don't get me wrong , I love darwin been here for over 6 months , its awesome but I was just highlighting not everything is better over here, hence highlighting the racism.

Where abouts are you going to be mainly based? NW is a big place:p
